Theatrikos October Newsletter: Heartwarming Comedy Cemetery Club, October 7-23

Cemetery Club Opens October 7
October 2022
In Time for Halloween: Cemetery Club runs October 7-23
Theatrikos’ upcoming production is Cemetery Club. “Doris, Ida and Lucille may just be deciding on another glass of wine, but their choices reflect larger choices in their lives. How do they face the reality of growing old? Is it wonderful to be content, or should they stay ambitious and passionate and keep wanting more? Cemetery Club asks these questions and more. It’s a humorous, heartwarming reflection on life,” says Cemetery Club director Gina Byars.
Sam, a charming widower in the show, is played by Jamey Hasapis, himself a widower, relates strongly to his character. He is especially impressed that “a young person (the playwright was in his 20s) had written Cemetery Club and its characters with so much depth. It’s as if he understood what it was like for older adults to start new lives after their life partners have died.”
“The play is absolutely funny, largely because the characters are so real and so well-developed. It’s not a non-stop laugh riot, though—the laughs are just one part of a rich a nuanced story of love, friendship, grief, and all of the complications that go along with that,” said actor Michael Rulon, who plays Lucille. “One thing that I get from this play is that you’re never too old to make mistakes, nor are you ever too old to learn from your mistakes.”
“I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.”

Nunsense Reached 56% Attendance
Since re-opening after our pandemic closure, theatre attendance has increased from 25% to 56% of capacity. This trend is positive, but it is still well below our pre-pandemic average of 75%, which is also the level we need to break even financially. Theatrikos is banking enough 2021 and 2022 disaster relief funds so that we are on schedule to get through 2023 and remain financially solvent.  For those patrons who are concerned about attending indoor public functions, Theatrikos is maintaining full coronavirus protocols at Sunday matinees: mandatory masks, proof of vaccination, and no refreshments.

Theatrikos Signs New 25/50/75 Year Lease
On September 10, Theatrikos signed a new lease with the City of Flagstaff. This new lease extends our residency in the Doris Harper White Playhouse for 25 years, with two 25 renewal options to 50 and 75 years. This will provide Theatrikos much needed stability for future planning and financing. For the past 30 years, the building’s leases have been limited to five years, a timeframe too short for meaningful long-term planning. The city has also agreed to assume all maintenance costs for the property in return for Theatrikos paying a higher rent.
This new lease helps the city fulfill its mission to grow downtown by fostering the arts, according to Stan Sutherland, president of Theatrikos board of directors. “We are grateful to the city for our new lease. It gives us the opportunity for improved long-term planning and fundraising, and this will improve our shows and our service to the community. It also demonstrates the city’s support for the arts and the economic value of arts organizations downtown. Theatrikos is a driver of the downtown economy, and the new lease will enable us to continue with that important mission,” said Sutherland.
The public signing of the new lease by Theatrikos executive director Chris Verrill and city of Flagstaff vice mayor Miranda Sweet occurred during Theatrikos’ 50th anniversary celebrations on September 10. Also on that day, Theatrikos did a ribbon cutting with the Chamber of Commerce and Vice Mayor Sweet read a proclamation announcing Theatrikos Week in Flagstaff.
The celebration then continued with the unveiling a new historical marker and two new signs. Sweet and Verrill unveiled the historical marker. The sign on the corner was unveiled by Sutherland and immediate past president Terri Brenneman. The main sign on the building was unveiled by Karen McFall and Heather Overton, the daughter and granddaughter of Doris Harper-White.
