City of Flagstaff announces minimum wage for 2024
FLAGSTAFF — The minimum wage in the City of Flagstaff will increase to $17.40 and $15.90 for tipped workers beginning on Jan. 1, 2024.
In 2016 the voters of Flagstaff wrote and passed The Minimum Wage Act (“the Act”) as a citizens’ initiative (Proposition 414). The Act, which is codified in Title 15 of the Flagstaff City Code, prescribes that beginning in 2023, the Flagstaff minimum wage shall be increased annually by the increase in the cost of living. Pursuant to the Act, “[t]he increase in the cost of living shall be measured by the percentage increase as of August of the immediately preceding year over the level as of August of the previous year of the consumer price index (all urban consumers, U.S. city average for all items)” (15-01-001-0003(B)). The increase shall be rounded to the nearest $0.05.

NAU conducting bilingual survey on wildfire, post-fire flooding information
FLAGSTAFF — Northern Arizona University is conducting a study to better understand the Greater Flagstaff-area residents’ experiences and opinions of wildfire and/or post-fire flooding information. We are trying to reach as many community members as possible to understand similarities and differences experienced by different neighborhoods, demographics, and home ownerships (e.g., renter, homeowner) to inform future wildfire and flooding information and serve the diversity of people who live in the Flagstaff area.

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, however, “old country” is a noun that refers to the country where a person was born or lived before moving to a new country. Hence, the Old Country is not the same for everyone because it depends on our individual ancestry, and it is normally used when we refer to family traditions or habits that came from our country of origin. In addition, Merriam-Webster gives us yet another definition of old: “dating from the remote past, persisting from an earlier time, of long standing, and of, relating to, or originating in a past era”, among others.

Tusayan’s first annual Cinco de Mayo celebration will take place on Friday, May 5 at the Squire Resort. The fiesta takes place from 3 to 7 p.m., is family-friendly, free, and open to the community.
There will also be lawn games, piñatas, a Mariachi band and a variety of authentic Mexican foods for guests to enjoy. The drive-in movie, Coco, will be begin at 5:30 p.m.
The Cinco de Mayo event is new this year and reflects the town’s goal of offering more activities and recreational opportunities for visitors and residents alike. A full flyer with more details on the event is available here.

Saints play a significant part in Naples’ institutions. The devotion to these saints – who alleviate pains or defend against the diseases- echoes a delicately masked polytheistic system which dates back to the foundation of the city by the Greeks about 3,000 years ago.
Naples’ agnostic fervor to idols is nowhere more epitomized than in the memorial to Argentinian soccer player Diego Armando Maradona inside Bar Nilo in Naples’ Quartiere Storico. Created from plaster and painted in blue and white -the club colors-, the altar is buried in Maradona memorabilia. Its centerpiece is a strand of Maradona’s “miraculous” hair exhibited inside a revolving, clear box. It has become a site of pilgrimage for Maradona fans all over the world, elevating the footballer to the status of a saint.
The basis for this worship is the fact that Maradona steered Naples to its single two Italian league championships in 1987 and 1990, and also the 1989 UEFA Cup. Naples had never won anything substantial before Maradona’s coming to the team, and he was treated as a redeemer by a city known for its poverty, and social struggles.

Cartagena de Indias, Cultural Heritage of Humanity, was founded in 1533 and still has a certain sumptuousness from that time: old houses of Spanish architecture with splendid central patios and bewitching balconies full of flowers. The city is all magical realism: it can be, at the same time, pearly, crimson, pink, bluish, brown, orange, purple, or emerald. In its narrow cobbled streets one can breathe legend, melancholy, gallantry, revelry, and natural beauty.
In the late afternoon, around 5:00 p.m. these colors of Cartagena become magical under the light of the tropical sunset, and the entire city becomes a colorful cacophony. The windows, the doors, the facades and walls of vibrant colors, all filled me with joy, enchanted me, and I felt like Florentino Ariza, that character of Gabriel García Márquez who thought he was dying of love. As the Colombian Nobel Prize for Literature would say in his autobiography Vivir para Contarla, “It was enough for me to take a step back inside the wall to see [Cartagena] in all its grandeur, in the light of 6 o’clock in the afternoon, and I could not repress the feeling of having been born again”

May 18 — NAU Global Film Series serves up the world
The Global Engagement and Language Learning (GELL) Center provides a space for NAU students to engage in the study of global languages and cultures in order to promote student success beyond the classroom.
As part of that mission, the GELL Center is bringing the Global Film Series, “Food in Film,” to campus; it explores human interactions and relationships through food and examining the ways we use food to express ourselves as human beings.
All films will be shown in their original languages with English subtitles on various Wednesday nights throughout the semester. Each film will be introduced by a faculty member from the appropriate language department with discussion afterward.
Adults and teens from the campus and community are encouraged to attend these free screenings. Watching foreign language films can be a great way to practice a new language and to learn about other cultures.

Led by the National Association of Counties (NACo), a bipartisan group of nearly 150 county elected officials urged congressional leaders to pass key behavioral and mental health policies before the end of the year.
In a letter to congressional leaders, the county officials wrote, “As a key intergovernmental partner, we urge you to work towards the passage of a bipartisan behavioral health package that enhances our ability to provide comprehensive behavioral health services in all settings, strengthens the behavioral health workforce and increases resident access to services.”
“In alliance with counties across the United States, this letter to our nation’s leadership details our shared goals of ensuring resources are provided to address the behavioral and mental health needs of residents,” stated Coconino County Board of Supervisors Chair Patrice Horstman. “I encourage everyone to read the letter sent to Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, and Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, to learn more about the national policies we support.”
Coconino High School students celebrate el Día de los Muertos with inaugural shoebox ofrenda competition
Spanish language and English learning students at Coconino High School celebrated el Día de los Muertos with an inaugural shoebox ofrenda competition with the winners selected on Friday, Nov. 4.
The 2022 winners are:
First place: Olivia Hernandez and Ciara Kitterman
Second place: Alexandra Villareal and Abigail Lopez
Third place: Aris Lerma
The students were allowed to pick any family member, celebrity, or notable person for their entry, and were required to write up the information in Spanish or English and their home language. Entries from English learners included Chinese and Ukrainian as well.
The competition, which was displayed at the CHS library, with students using QR codes to vote for the winners, also featured students from the classes of English Learner Teacher Erin Fagan and Spanish Teacher Olaya “Lizett’ Castruita, who has created a full-size ofrenda in her classroom for many years.

The Cardiovascular Regulation Laboratory in the Department of Biological Sciences at NAU is seeking to recruit individuals of Hispanic background for a National Institutes of Health funded research study.
What are we studying?
We are specifically interested in how an individual’s genetic make-up influences their ability to process sugar. We will relate your genetic make-up and ability to process sugar to how your body responds to tests that alter your blood pressure. Some of these tests include getting images of a vessel in your upper arm, a test where you place your hand in very cold water, a mental math test (subtraction), and an exercise test.

Summertime in Phoenix is the opposite of cities like Chicago and New York, where residents cannot wait for the temperatures to climb above freezing to get outside to enjoy their parks and al fresco dining. In Phoenix and the Southwest, we seek refuge from the extreme summer heat and head indoors or to the pool. Tourist season ends soon after spring training and doesn’t pick up again until the fall.

Not overweight (<30BMI)
Normal to slightly elevated blood pressure
COVID-19 Negative

Alfonso Ortiz Tirado was an opera singer and medical doctor born in Alamos, Sonora, Mexico in 1893. His obvious musical talent surfaced early in his life but nevertheless he decided to study medicine. It is in this capacity as a doctor that he is remembered by his many charitable contributions to the Mexican people, especially children. He also had a successful international career as an opera singer, earning the designation of “Tenor of the Americas”.
After a one-year hiatus required by Covid 19, the 37th Annual Music Festival Alfonso Ortiz Tirado happened this year in his birthplace of Alamos to pay homage to its illustrious son. The festival sponsored renowned local, national, and international musicians in numerous styles such as opera, classical music, popular music, and rhythm and blues, and also presented an important way for emerging performers to develop networks and foster their reputation.

This is our first update of the year. We, as I’m sure many of you, are working on our plans to deliver services and products that benefit our communities, in my particular case, Hispanic/Latinos.
In 2022 we will continue with our radio/FB live shows on Salud, Dinero y Amistad, a show where we address Social Security, Medicare, healthcare in general, finances, fraud and scams, retirement preparation and other current issues. We have done 4 shows so far (all with Finances as the underlying concept); as you know, the videos can be accessed on our FB page at www.facebook.com/aarparizonahispanicconnection.

I have spent quite a bit of time and funds wandering to faraway lands. I have admired infinite oceans of impossible blue and have climbed majestic mountains. Up until now, however, I hadn’t contemplated from my bedroom window those tiny dewdrops on the multi-hued green leaves of my mom’s papaya tree.
Slowly the window became my own inner self and I started pondering about the purpose of my life. I found the answer in the twinkle of those dewdrops dancing on the surface of those leaves, also of an impossible green.
Life is jam-packed with enjoyment and magnificence. Muse on the small, often overlooked details: a gentle wind, a summer downpour, a dewdrop on a green leaf in the morning sun… Touch the wind, smell the rain, feel the joy. Live your life with happiness and delight, for you are very fortunate to be who you are.

The state of Baja California Sur in Mexico has a territory of almost 74,000 square kilometers, with 2,220 kilometers of beaches divided between the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of California. It enjoys pollutant-free waters which translates into higher quality and better flavor of its fish products. About 3% of the total population of the state is dedicated to fishing, with a fleet of almost 4,000 small boats and approximately 9,700 fishermen using practically the same fishing gear and techniques that were used 70 years ago.
Despite their important contribution to the economy, Mexican artisan fishermen constitute one of the most vulnerable segments of the population. The precariousness of their living conditions is manifested in their huts made of palm, cardboard sheets or planks, and with a dirt floor; and their villages generally lack the most basic public services such as drinking water, electricity, and sewerage. Their work is especially risky due to the conditions in which they do it since they sail in fragile boats with outboard motors and without navigation instruments. In addition, despite the fact that the fishermen’s trade is learned in the water, some of them cannot swim and do not use life-saving equipment.

The 2021 Museum Flood Preparedness & Mitigation Guide is now available in Spanish on the Museum Flood area web page at www.coconino.az.gov/MuseumFire/FloodArea web page or directly via www.coconino.az.gov/GuiaDeInundaciones2021.
The Guide offers flood preparation guidelines and resources to help keep you and your family aware, informed, and safe during monsoon season. In addition, the Guide has information regarding emergency notification, sandbag maintenance preparation, what to do after a flood and flood preparation activities by the Coconino County Flood Control District and City of Flagstaff.

During a recent photographic journey to the state of Yucatan, Mexico I noticed with amazement that, amidst the current COVID pandemic, everybody -vendors and customers in stores and markets, tourists exploring the sites, employees in government organizations, and even priests in churches- was wearing face coverings, even in the blazing hot mid-day sun; likewise, the community at large implemented measures to protect its members from being infected with the nasty virus while life went on somewhat as usual. No discussions, no arguments (political or otherwise), no reluctancy.
This was in sharp contrast with the general attitude of community members in my country of residence, the United States, and as a cultural anthropologist wondered about the reason behind these two very dissimilar ways of behaving. Two equally dissimilar cultural concepts came to mind: individualism and collectivism.

Bilingual report — Applications open for DES Emergency Broadband Benefit (EBB) Program
The Emergency Broadband Benefit (EBB) is an FCC program to help families and households struggling to afford internet service during the COVID-19 pandemic. This new benefit will connect eligible households to jobs, critical healthcare services, virtual classrooms, DES Services, and so much more.
The DES Office of Community Engagement would like to share with you information about this program. The EBB program opens on May 12, 2021 for eligible individuals and households to enroll. Below is additional information and the link to the Toolkit.

Coconino County has opened over 1,400 first dose COVID-19 vaccination appointments for the Fort Tuthill County Park vaccination site in Flagstaff. Appointment times are available from Monday, March 8 through Tuesday, March 16.

On Friday, Feb. 26 at noon, Coconino County will open over 700 first dose COVID-19 vaccination appointments for the Fort Tuthill County Park vaccination site. Appointment times are available on Monday, March 1 and Tuesday, March 2.
Those interested in scheduling an appointment can visit coconino.az.gov/covid19vaccine and navigate to Vaccine Locations webpage, then click on the Flagstaff – March, Fort Tuthill, First Dose link. With the release of additional appointments, Coconino County is also unveiling a Spanish vaccine registration system. English and Spanish registration links for Monday and Tuesday appointments can be found at noon on Friday at coconino.az.gov/covid19vaccine
Nov. 14 — NAU Wind Symphony to present ‘Escenas,’ with guest conductor Luis Sánchez
Please join us on Sunday, Nov. 14 at 3 p.m. in Ardrey Memorial Auditorium for a special concert featuring renowned conductor, Luis Sánchez, and the NAU Wind Symphony. Titled “Escenas,” this concert celebrates folk music with works by Arturo Márquez and Silvestre Revueltas as well as a special performance by Flagstaff’s ownBallet Folklórico de Colores on Pablo Moncayo’s Huapango.
Utility Assistance in Arizona — Preventing Utility Shut-Offs
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, various cities and companies suspended utility shut-offs in an effort to help struggling residents. Now, as shut-offs are beginning to resume, residents are being encouraged to seek financial assistance or work with their utility company to develop a payment plan if they are unable to pay their bills.
Contact your utility company as soon as possible if you anticipate being unable to pay your bill for any reason. Your utility company will walk you through available assistance options such as setting up a payment plan, applying to one of their programs, or applying for aid through a local agency.

During a recent trip to the central region of Colombia I ran into a very complete, well organized jewel of a museum: the Archeological Museum of Zipaquirá (MAZ). The building encompasses three large rooms permanently exhibiting more than 3500 original archaeological pieces representing nineteen pre-Hispanic cultures that had settlements in different parts of Colombia before the Colonization.
