in Phoenix is the opposite of cities like Chicago and New York, where residents cannot wait for the temperatures to climb above freezing to get outside to enjoy their parks and al fresco dining. In Phoenix and the Southwest, we seek refuge from the extreme summer heat and head indoors or to the pool. Tourist season ends soon after spring training and doesn’t pick up again until the fall.

But that does not mean that business grinds to a halt. We continue to strengthen the Arizona–Mexico connection, as you will learn in #ChooseMexico when you read about the Space Project Partnership between the Mexican Space Agency and the University of Arizona (p.3).

In #Arizona Thrives, U.S. Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick explains her tireless work to support a robust border infrastructure to encourage trade and tourism efforts that offer significant economic benefits for both Mexico and Arizona (p.5). In this section, you will also meet David Ortega, Scottsdale’s first Latino mayor, who is working hard to strengthen the ties between Scottsdale and Latin America (p.6) and Show Low Mayor John Leech Jr., who will convince you to head north to escape the Sonoran Desert heat and enjoy the cool mountain breezes in the city known as the gateway to the beautiful White Mountains (p.7).

Finally, #DiscoverMexico features three more beautiful travel destinations: Veracruz (p.9), where its vibrant and colorful yearly carnival has been celebrated for more than 150 years;
Jalisco (p.10), the charming state on the Pacific Ocean that is the birthplace of tequila and where you can visit nine pueblo mágicos; and the state of Colima (p.13), located just south of Jalisco, that is home

to Manzanillo, the self-proclaimed “sailfish capital of the world.” For movie trivia buffs: Playa La Audiencia is where the beach scenes for the 1979 movie, 10, were filmed.
