The state of Baja California Sur in Mexico has a territory of almost 74,000 square kilometers, with 2,220 kilometers of beaches divided between the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of California. It enjoys pollutant-free waters which translates into higher quality and better flavor of its fish products. About 3% of the total population of the state is dedicated to fishing, with a fleet of almost 4,000 small boats and approximately 9,700 fishermen using practically the same fishing gear and techniques that were used 70 years ago.Despite their important contribution to the economy, Mexican artisan fishermen constitute one of the most vulnerable segments of the population. The precariousness of their living conditions is manifested in their huts made of palm, cardboard sheets or planks, and with a dirt floor; and their villages generally lack the most basic public services such as drinking water, electricity, and sewerage. Their work is especially risky due to the conditions in which they do it since they sail in fragile boats with outboard motors and without navigation instruments. In addition, despite the fact that the fishermen’s trade is learned in the water, some of them cannot swim and do not use life-saving equipment.

Within the housing structures built by fishermen to protect themselves and their families, for which they have no ownership papers, the only pieces of furniture in sight may be some semi-ruined beds, an old television set, a four-burner stove, a cooler to keep the day’s catch fresh, and a rustic table. Due to the fluctuating demand for the product, climate variations, and legal restrictions, they are extremely concerned about earning their daily livelihood. A hurricane does not scare them as much as the terrifying hunger.

El estado de Baja California Sur en México cuenta con un territorio de casi 74.000 kilómetros cuadrados, con 2.220 kilómetros de playas divididos entre el Océano Pacífico y el Golfo de California. Disfruta de aguas libres de contaminantes, lo cual se traduce en una mayor calidad y mejor sabor de sus productos pesqueros. Alrededor de 3% de la población total del estado se dedica a la actividad pesquera, con una flota de casi 4.000 embarcaciones menores y aproximadamente 9.700 pescadores que utilizan prácticamente las mismas artes de pesca que se usaban hace 70 años.

A pesar de su importante contribución a la economía, los pescadores artesanales mexicanos constituyen uno de los segmentos más desprotegidos de la población. La precariedad de sus condiciones de vida se manifiesta en sus chozas hechas de palma, láminas de cartón o tablones y con piso de tierra; y sus pueblos carecen por lo general de los servicios públicos más básicos como agua potable, electricidad, y alcantarillado. Su trabajo resulta especialmente riesgoso debido a las condiciones en que lo realizan, pues lo hacen en frágiles embarcaciones con motor fuera de borda y sin instrumentos de navegación. Además, a pesar de que el oficio de pescador se aprende en el agua, algunos de ellos no saben nadar y no utilizan equipo de salvamento.

Dentro de las estructuras habitacionales construidas por los pescadores para resguardarse con sus familias y para las cuales no tienen papeles de propiedad, los únicos muebles a la vista pueden ser unas camas semi-derruidas, un televisor viejo, una cocina de cuatro hornillas, una nevera portátil para mantener la pesca del día, y una rústica mesa. Debido a la fluctuación en la demanda del producto, las variaciones del clima, y las restricciones legales, les preocupa sobremanera el poder ganar el sustento diario. Un huracán no los espanta tanto como la aterradora hambre.

As in past years, we are offering two versions of our exclusive calendars, each version showing 13+ images printed on high-quality cardstock: a 12-month, 8 ½”x11” wall calendar that will give you a quick-glance view of every month and room to write in appointments and notes, and a 5”x11” 12-month desk calendar with a handsome and durable built-in easel for display.

This year we will include in the packaging a miniature clay charm, made and painted by Maya artisans specifically for this project. This will make our calendars even more precious to you, your friends, and your family. Our classy calendars also make a very appropriate, one-of-a-kind corporate holiday gift.  They are assembled completely by hand, individually signed by GSP, finished, wrapped, and mailed directly from our studio. Therefore, they are not available through our website shopping cart. Each wall calendar costs US$35, and each desk calendar costs US$45 plus shipping and taxes.
