This combination allows our department to offer flexible and diverse programming in both traditional and contemporary techniques.
Through demonstration and one-on-one instruction, students will learn to throw a variety of forms on the potter’s wheel or techniques to create hand-built works. Slab roller, extruder and forms are also available to create functional and decorative pieces. Tuition includes the first 25-pound bag of clay, firings and glazes, and one open studio session per week.

Handbuilding Ceramics October 2–November 6, 2018
Suzy Allan
Hand Building Ceramics – 6 Class Sessions + 6 Open Studio Sessions
Come play in the clay! Tap into your creative self and experience various hand building techniques. Make bowls, boxes, sculptures, tiles, using slabs, molds, and textures. The possibilities are endless. Open to all levels, beginners welcome!
From the beginning to the experienced student, this one-day class in oil or acrylic will guide and teach students how to approach the painting process with confidence, while exploring the basics of value-pattern, composition and color. Students may work from life and/or photos. Instructor demonstrations and lots of individual attention provided. Students should take a drawing class prior to attempting painting.
In this workshop, through clearly explaining concepts in the translation process from a three dimensional environment to a two dimensional surface, I will clear up the mystery, and strengthen your knowledge of the process and visual language of painting, from the source (plein air) to the studio. I teach a 4 pronged visual language approach (Value, Shapes, Edges, and Texture) that is both easy to remember and an effective way of breaking down difficult subject matter into manageable information. This workshop meets for 3.5 days. The final day is a complete demonstration of taking a plein air painting done from life and building a larger and more detailed composition in the studio setting.
Texture, Color, Feeling November 5–7, 2018
Jan Sitts
Jan’s experience and enthusiasm create an atmosphere of fun and spontaneity inspiring new directions and discovery through innovative combinations of design and materials. By combining aggressive textures and unusual mediums with various “raw” materials in the abstract painting we get surprising results. The layering method yields a magnetism that is particular to mixed media. Many techniques, materials, compositions and above all emotion, play off each other in creating the work. Part of the adventure is not knowing where you are going until you get there! You will become thrilled with possibility as you journey through this process. You will learn to let go of painting habits and gain the knowledge of layering textures, colors and feelings while executing shapes utilizing a structure of positive and negative space.
Painting the Southern Desert November 10–12, 2018
Gretchen Lopez
Experience the history of Arizona and the beauty of the Southern desert, as we paint in and around the first European settlement in the region. Tubac is a wonderful go-to destination where we will study capturing the light and learning to paint the essence of what you see from life. These loose, impressionistic oil sketches can be seen as stand-alone artworks or studies for studio work later on. Most sites are within walking distance from the Tubac Country Inn! But we will also sojourn to the Historic missions of Tumacacori and the fabulous “Dove of the Desert” at the Golden Hour, San Xavier Del Bac all within a 15 minute drive! Oils, Water-mixable Oils, Acrylic and Watercolor are all welcome with the plein-air equipment of your choice.
Activating Negative Space November 10–13, 2018
Vince Fazio
This exploratory step-by-step workshop takes you on a unique journey all your own! Guided collage exercises are followed by composition studies using your collages as subject matter. We’ll also do some writings on the collages to establish the mood of the work, building the backstory for a final painting. We then explore a process of drawing and layering acrylic paint to create a new work in a surprising style derived from subject matter of your own creation. Using the same prompts and instructions each person’s work magically goes off in its own direction.
Sedona Dreamscapes Painting Nature using Acrylics and Gold and Metal Leaf December 3–6, 2018
Jean Bradbury
Taking inspiration from the natural setting of Sedona we will paint the plants, animals and geology that surrounds us, combining them into magical landscapes reminiscent of memories or dreams. We will capture the changing desert light by using copper, aluminum and ‘gold’ leaf. This course combines the rigors of botanical observation with some hippy, drippy acrylic spontaneity. Prepare to sharpen your drawing and observational skills while expressing your love of nature with loose and juicy acrylics. No drawing experience is required. You’ll be amazed how good you already are with a little instruction and a lot of gentle encouragement. Students may choose to include animals that they observe during out time in the workshop such as insects and birds. We will take a few short strolls to see what we can find.
Creative Felting February 21–23, 2019
Patti Barker
Nuno Felt Sampling – The Sampler Series is an adventure in textural Nuno felt techniques–from simulated animal skins to roses and ruffles, we will entrap beads, learn mosaics and create raised shapes. Participants will come away with 6, 10″x 10″ samplers, printed instructions, and skills to use in creating unique felted accessories and garments. Students will learn at least 8 different textural techniques.
Collage Nuno Felt Scarf – Participants have fun piecing together various silk remnants with merino wool, and wet felting them into a new art statement accessory.
Art Dolls – Art Dolls are as therapeutic as they are fun! Bring an art doll to life in this one day workshop. Participants learn to sculpt a doll head with a felting needle, paint watercolor “makeup,” and finish by dressing and adorning your Art Doll.
Intuitive Expressive Painting February 28–March 3, 2019
Jesse Reno
Imagining the Unimaginable – with Jesse Reno
In this mixed-media painting class you will learn to create paintings that emerge from an abstract base of markings, colors, line, and shape to form expressive and organic creations. You will learn painting and mark-making techniques that will encourage imagery and connection to your work. Through a series of painting exercises, you will explore and express your ideas by imagining what could be created from abstraction rather than confining your ideas to predetermined outcomes.
Using simple materials and techniques you will be free to express yourself within your paintings in new ways – finding yourself as a painter from the raw base of art, learning your personal likes dislikes, connecting you to your practice and imagery from a position of experimentation and instinct, and teaching you to imagine the unimaginable.
