Coconino Coalition for Children & Youth (www.coconinokids.org) is working hard to better understand root causes of trauma and promoting tools for resiliency. We know that social connection is a key protective factor for both youth and families.
During Covid, we began a virtual youth open mic. The purpose is to provide a safe space for youth to express themselves through music, art, poetry, theater, dance, photography, or cultural sharing. The event takes place the first Sunday of each month at 4 p.m. The next event is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 5.
Throughout the fall, 30 educators from around Coconino County have participated in over 30 hours of professional development as a part of the Early Engineers project. This project is designed for kindergarten through 3rd grade educators interested in learning strategies to engage their students in place-based, developmentally appropriate STEM challenges as part of a standards-based curriculum. A select group from this cohort will continue their learning this spring, with support and guidance from CCESA and Worcester Polytechnic Institute, as they design and implement their own STEM curriculum units that are focused on Coconino and the regional environment.
