Our community is in desperate need of help as the monsoon season brings floods to neighborhoods below the burn scar. Homeowners in the affected areas, including some in our NAU community, need millions of sandbags to protect their property. Lumberjacks are encouraged to use their volunteer hours to fill sandbags—various filling stations are set up throughout the city and county. Consider taking a few hours over the coming days to fill sandbags with friends, coworkers, family and fellow community members. Check in with those who may be affected to see what you can do to help.
Disease ecologist Joe Mihaljevic is spearheading the development of EpiMoRPH, a collaborative online hub that will make forecasting epidemics vastly more transparent and reliable. This work is funded by a $3.5M NIH grant.
In many regions, climate change is causing forests to burn more frequently than they have for hundreds or thousands of years. But some forests reburn on a faster timeline and others don’t. Learning about when and where certain forests burn again within a few decades could hold important clues for both local communities and scientists preparing for a more fiery global future. A team of Ecoss researchers has received a $900,000 grant from NASA to learn about these reburns in the boreal forest by matching satellite and LIDAR aerial images with measurements taken on the ground.
NAU created the Higher Education Child Care Project to assist students with young children by granting reimbursements for child care expenses. The application opens July 5 for retroactively eligible spring and summer student-parents and those enrolled in future terms.

One-third of the largest class of Dorrance Scholars in history are starting at NAU this fall. The prestigious scholarship is a need-based award that aims to instill college-going traditions in future generations of Arizona families, provide financial access and academic support for recipients and enhance college persistence through unique enrichment experiences. In addition to receiving financial assistance, Dorrance Scholars have the opportunity for international study and travel and innovative entrepreneurship experience, as well as mentoring and tutoring.
