Painting Luminous Watercolors
with Impressionistic Brushwork

November 15–16, 2025, Saturday – Sunday

Learn to capture the beauty of light in this two-day workshop! Betty teaches students to accurately portray the effect of light on any subject in watercolor. Students will explore a variety of locations in beautiful Sedona.

Betty begins each day with a demonstration/ lecture covering tools, techniques, brushwork, problems and solutions. Emphasis throughout the workshop is on organization and simplification of darks and lights, value and color relationships, edges, movement and mass to create a dynamic, coherent composition.

The Joy of Painting: A Bob Ross Class
with DJones
November 18, 2025, Tuesday, 1-4pm

Tap into your inner artist and experience the joy of painting — Bob Ross style! In this fun, hands-on workshop, a Certified Ross Instructor will guide you step-by-step through creating your own landscape masterpiece using traditional Bob Ross wet-on-wet oil techniques. Learn how to paint happy little trees, soft clouds, and serene mountain scenes in just three hours.

All materials are included, and all skill levels are welcome — no experience needed! Ages 12 and up can participate with an adult, making this a perfect creative outing for families or friends. Come paint, relax, and discover just how happy art can be.

In today’s digital age, your iPhone can be more than just a phone — it’s a camera, an editing studio, and a powerful creative tool. Join photographer and artist Kelli Klymenko for a one-day workshop designed for both beginners and advanced users.

Learn how to turn everyday moments into striking works of art with nothing more than your iPhone. This hands-on class covers breathtaking landscapes, expressive portraits, and up-close macro photography — plus the editing apps and techniques that will take your images to the next level.

Paper Paintings: Birds and Blooms

November 21–23, 2025, Friday – Sunday

Everyone loves birds! Simple shapes and bold colors are what we focus on when learning how to collage songbirds and blooms. I will teach you how to transfer a sketch from your reference photo, create a comprehensive underpainting with shading and a background, how to gel print your own papers, and how to apply collage! At the end of this three day workshop, you will have the skills and confidence to create your own Paper Painting!

This workshop is a comprehensive class in which students are taught a unique figurative collage technique. Emphasis will be on developing form using light, shadow, and directional ripping– very similar to traditional painting techniques. No prior collage experience is necessary. Some painting experience would be helpful, but not imperative.

Watercolor Crash Course: Capturing Luminous Light

This class is perfect for beginners with some drawing experience and for seasoned painters looking to expand their watercolor skills. We’ll explore brushwork, mediums, paper, and the art of painting light and shadow. Learn glazing, texture, and frisket techniques while creating luminous, impressionistic watercolors full of color and life.

CERAMICS: Independent Study

December 8–January 9, 2025 – Mondays, 3:30–6:30pm

Refine your skills in a supportive studio setting while working on self-directed projects. 

This class offers a supportive studio environment for intermediate and advanced students ready to deepen their ceramics practice. Under Ben’s guidance, you’ll explore advanced throwing and hand-building techniques such as lidded vessels, plates, and bottle forms, while developing your own personal projects. You’ll also experiment with surface decoration, glazing, and finishing to bring your unique vision to life. Weekly open studio sessions provide extra practice time, and materials—including 25 pounds of clay, glazes, and firings—are included. One-on-one instructor support ensures personalized guidance throughout the course.

Exploring and Developing Glazes

December 9 – January 20, 2025 – Tuesdays, 1-4pm

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the creation and modification of ceramic glazes. Students will begin by learning how to read glaze recipes and accurately prepare liquid glaze batches. Building on this foundation, the course explores techniques for developing multiple glaze variations from a limited number of initial batches.

Silk Scarf Dyeing Workshop
with Joan Roberts
December 10–11, 2025, Wednesday – Thursday

Unleash your creativity and design beautiful, one-of-a-kind silk scarves — perfect as gifts or for yourself! In this hands-on workshop, you’ll explore three distinct dyeing techniques: rust dyeing, acid dyes, and Jacquard dyes. You’ll receive three scarves to create and experiment with, plus access to fabric paints to add your own artistic flair.

Ceramics Explorations: Wheel and Beyond

December 11–January 22, 2025 – Thursdays, 4–7pm

This class is perfect for students eager to develop and advance their pottery skills in a fun, supportive environment. Using the potter’s wheel, slab roller, extruder, and texture tools, you’ll experiment with both functional and decorative techniques to bring your creative ideas to life. Small class sizes ensure personalized instruction tailored to your skill level and goals. Whether you’re a beginner building your foundation or an experienced student refining your craft, you’ll gain confidence and learn essential techniques. Materials—including 25 pounds of clay, glazes, firings, and weekly open studio access—are included, with optional pottery tool kits available for purchase.

Scholarships are an important part of Sedona Arts Center. It has a long history in providing students in need of financial assistance, the ability to hone their skills and creative talents. Art classes and workshops also allow an emotional break from daily life and offer social interaction with fellow lovers of art. We are proud to offer our scholarship program, with the help of The Kling Family Foundation, The Ceramics Scholarship Fund, and the Debbie Winslow Scholarship Fund, which allow us to continue this long standing opportunity.
