Buffalo Park Water Tank Mural

Keep an eye out next week, when the City of Flagstaff opens a Request for Statements of Qualifications (RSOQs) for an artist or artist team to design and execute a large-scale mural on the Buffalo Park water tank. This highly visible project could reflect Flagstaff, Northern Arizona, the current activity and/or history of the park, or the communities that utilize this natural and recreational resource. The mural will become an emblematic feature of the park and the surrounding area.

Five finalists will receive an honorarium of $5,000. The total budget for this project is up to $300,000 for fabrication and installation.

Application Deadline: February 17, 2026, 5:00 pm (Arizona Time)

Note: Applications will be accepted exclusively through OpenGov. Artists interested in applying are encouraged to register on OpenGov in advance. Beautification, Arts & Sciences e-subscribers will receive an email when the Call opens.

Southside Projects Celebrate

Community and Connection

Two new City of Flagstaff public art projects celebrate the Southside and remind us why this neighborhood holds such an important place in Flagstaff’s cultural heritage. Rustle, by artist Beth Nybeck, represents nature, the interconnected stories of the neighborhood, and the rich history of the Southside. Placed within Cleo Murdoch Park, the eight-foot-tall weathering steel artwork incorporates words and phrases contributed by members of the community—a sculpture that truly reflects the Southside and the people who have called it, and continue to call it, home. The Historic Dunbar School Plaque, located at the entrance to Murdoch Community Center, honors the school’s legacy and the contributions of Paul Laurence Dunbar, Principal Cleo Murdoch, and Principal Wilson Riles. Designed by artist Marie Jones with interpretive text by Dr. Ricardo Guthrie, the plaque includes an interactive component that allows visitors to view the original foundation stones of the school.

Re-source: Art Made Responsibly

The HeArt Box and Azulita Project invite artists working in all mediums to submit work to Re-Source, a juried exhibition opening in April 2026 in downtown Flagstaff at The HeArt Box Gallery. This show celebrates creative reuse, ecological mindfulness, and the shared responsibility to protect Earth’s vital resources. Re-Source asks artists to consider where their materials come from, what happens to them when the work is complete, and how artistic practice can evolve toward greater sustainability. Exhibition organizers seek high-quality, professional artworks created from recycled, repurposed, low-impact, biodegradable, or locally sourced materials. Limited plastic usage is acceptable only when materials are reused, repurposed, or integral to the concept. Artists are encouraged to experiment, innovate, and push the boundaries of sustainable creative practice.
