Grand Canyon Water Update – April 2, 2026

The park is currently under Stage 3 water restrictions as crews continue work to restore pumping following a recent break.

Utility staff and contractors completed a key pipeline repair earlier this week. Flushing is expected to resume today (Thursday), with re-pressurization beginning early tomorrow (Friday). If successful, water sampling will follow, with results expected within 24 hours. The current estimate for restoration of service to the South Rim is late Saturday or early Sunday.

Due to limited water availability in campground areas, fire safety restrictions are now in effect at Mather Campground and Trailer Village. Campfires, charcoal and wood fires, and most ignition sources are prohibited, while the use of LPG-fueled devices (such as camp stoves) is still allowed under specific conditions. These measures are in place to reduce fire risk while water supplies for firefighting are constrained.

Additional impacts include:

  • Camper Services operated by Delaware North is closed.
  • Phantom Ranch is closed for overnight guests through Monday, April 6.
  • Water is currently off at Boat Beach, Delta Restroom, and Bright Angel Campground. Water outside the Phantom Ranch Canteen remains on while water supplies last.
  • Water remains available in residential areas and other designated locations within the park.

Employees and residents are encouraged to continue conservation efforts as crews work toward safely restoring full water service.

Tribal Partnerships Help Preserve Rare Agave in the Grand Canyon

A few weeks ago, the staff from the Tribal Affairs and Vegetation programs collaborated with representatives from the Southern Paiute and Hualapai Tribes, as well as the Desert Botanical Garden, to monitor rare, domesticated agave plants in remote areas of the canyon.

This work is part of a broader tribal co-stewardship initiative focused on preserving and conserving culturally significant plants. These agaves have a special connection to Indigenous communities, having been selectively cultivated for traits such as size and sweetness. Protecting these plants in their cultural context helps maintain the story and deep connection between Indigenous people and the Grand Canyon landscape.

Grand Canyon Clinic Transitions to Elk Ridge Community Health

Effective April 1, the Grand Canyon Clinic has transitioned to new management and is now operating as Elk Ridge Community Health, a division of El Rio Health. This change follows the recent bankruptcy of North Country HealthCare and an agreement for El Rio Health to assume operations across northern Arizona.

For Grand Canyon residents, employees, and families who rely on the clinic, the transition is designed to be seamless. Patients can continue receiving care at the same location, with no changes to scheduled appointments. Medical records will automatically transfer to Elk Ridge, and no action is required from patients.

Elk Ridge Community Health will continue to provide primary care services while working to expand staffing and maintain consistent access to care. In the coming months, patients will also gain access to the MyChart patient portal, offering new tools to manage appointments, request prescription refills, communicate with providers, and review test results.

This transition ensures that the Grand Canyon community continues to have reliable access to essential healthcare services while building toward a stable and sustainable future for the clinic.

Canyon Village Market Roof Replacement Completed

A major infrastructure improvement project at Canyon Village Market, operated by Delaware North, was successfully completed after six months of work beginning in October 2025. The project focused on replacing the facility’s aging roof to improve durability, safety, and long-term performance.

The new roof features upgraded PVC materials designed to extend its lifespan, along with fire-treated shingles sourced from the original supplier in British Columbia that will better retain their appearance over time. Crews also increased the roof’s pitch to improve snow and ice melt runoff, helping protect the structure during winter conditions. Additional improvements included repairing more than a dozen problem areas, restoring the entire underside of the roof, and installing a secure ladder for safer maintenance access.

This project represents a significant investment in maintaining and improving critical visitor services infrastructure at Canyon Village Market.

Heads up! SR 64 Roadwork Begins in April

The Arizona Department of Transportation will begin a major improvement project along State Route 64 (SR) starting the week of April 6.

Work will take place along a 19-mile stretch of SR 64 between Interstate 40 and Pipeline Road near Williams. Crews will resurface the roadway, improve more than 50 driveways and pullouts, and add left-turn lanes at key intersections, including Pronghorn Ranch and Sunset Strips roads.

Most construction activity will occur overnight from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., Sunday through Thursday, with intermittent daytime lane restrictions expected Monday through Thursday and Friday mornings. Drivers should plan for delays and use caution when traveling through the work zone.

This $33 million project is expected to be completed by fall 2027 and will improve safety and driving conditions along this important corridor to the Grand Canyon. Key details of this project can be found in the attached flyer here.

Grand Canyon National Park, in northern Arizona, encompasses 278 miles (447 km) of the Colorado River and adjacent uplands. Located on the ancestral homeland of 11 Associated Tribes, Grand Canyon is one of the most spectacular examples of erosion anywhere in the world—unmatched in the incomparable vistas it offers visitors on the rim. Grand Canyon National Park is a World Heritage Site. The National Park Service cares for the special places saved by the American people so that all may experience our heritage.
