Community Update – Grand Canyon National Park

September 15, 2026

Water system recovery continues, Conservation Efforts are Working

Efforts to restore the park’s water supply are advancing at the delta, where contractors used excavators to establish the footprint for the new water intake project. A wastewater treatment operator was also brought to Phantom Ranch to test the wastewater treatment plant as crews prepare to return the system to limited service.

On the South Rim, the water treatment plant contractor is preparing to begin startup and testing once the new delta intake is able to provide raw water to the plant. The contractor is coordinating closely with the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality as testing and the process to return the plant to service move forward.

NPS and concession employees continue to identify and repair leaks throughout the park water system.

The park continues to monitor water use and tank levels closely. Daily tank-level numbers may vary because water is automatically moved between tanks as part of operating the water system. A change in the tank farm level therefore does not necessarily represent the amount of water used during that period.

For example, yesterday, the tank farm level decreased 0.41 feet. Water was moved from the tank farm to Tank C during that period, and actual water use was consistent with the previous day.

Conservation efforts continue to make a significant difference. Today, conservation and mitigation efforts offset 99,923 gallons of water use. Thank you to everyone in the Grand Canyon community for continuing to conserve water. Every drop counts.

Free community showers

Free shower facilities are available to Grand Canyon residents until further notice. Residents are strongly encouraged to use these facilities whenever possible to reduce household water use and help conserve the park’s limited water supply. This week ADA showers were also placed at four locations throughout the park.

Locations

  • 63 Sunset Drive
  • Albright Training Center parking lot (ADA shower now available)
  • Maswik North
  • Desert View along Cedar Mountain Road (ADA shower now available)
  • Trailer Village, near L Street (ADA shower now available)
  • 38 Coconino Street
  • Supai Camp (ADA shower now available)

Hours

  • 6 a.m.-noon
  • Closed noon-2 p.m. for cleaning
  • 2-9 p.m.

Residents should bring their own toiletries, including soap and shampoo. Toiletries are not provided. Shower shoes are encouraged.

The average shower uses approximately 17 gallons of water. Using the community shower facilities instead of showering at home can help significantly reduce household water use.

Free community laundry service

The Incident Management Team has partnered with a contracted laundry service to provide free laundry services to Grand Canyon residents during the ongoing water conservation efforts. Laundry services are available at 2 Albright and Maswik North. Both locations are open to the entire community.

Hours: 7 a.m.-8 p.m. daily

Turnaround: Approximately 24 hours

Cost: Free

When dropping off laundry, residents will need to provide their name and phone number. The laundry service will contact them when the laundry is ready for pickup.

Laundry detergent provided through the service is unscented and hypoallergenic.

Residents are strongly encouraged to take advantage of this free service.Using the contracted laundry service reduces the amount of water used by individual households and helps protect the limited water resources available to the community.

Other incident updates

At Phantom Ranch, crews transported and installed a Starlink/FirstNet system, providing Wi-Fi and cellular service for crews working in the area. Restoring these services will support overnight operations at Phantom Ranch and reduce the number of daily flights needed to support crews.

The Assessment Team continues processing field data to develop cost estimates, project scopes and recovery plans. Teams are transitioning from field assessments to developing projects, timelines and milestones to guide the next phase of response and recovery. The park will share planning information as it is sufficiently developed to provide useful information to the community.

We encourage all community members to subscribe to both of the Incident Management Team’s information platforms to receive the latest updates.
