Assessor’s Office accepting applications for property tax exemption and relief programs

COCONINO COUNTY — The Coconino County Assessor’s Office is now accepting applications for several property tax exemption and relief programs designed to assist qualified individuals on a limited income.

These programs help reduce or stabilize the property value used to calculate property taxes and are administered annually by the Assessor’s Office.

Arizona law provides property tax assistance options for eligible widows and widowers, veterans with a disability and individuals with a permanent disability, commonly referred to as individual exemption programs. These exemptions reduce the assessed value of qualifying property, which may include individually owned real estate, mobile homes and, in some cases, personal property. Applications for individual exemptions are accepted Jan. 1 through Mar. 1 each year.

Beginning in 2025, legislative changes expanded the veterans with a disability exemption. Eligible veterans with a 100 percent service-connected disability who meet applicable income requirements may now qualify for a full property tax exemption. Veterans with a service-connected disability rated below 100 percent or a non-service-connected disability may still qualify for a reduction.

“These programs are designed to provide meaningful property tax relief for members of our community who are on a limited income,” said Coconino County Assessor Armando Ruiz. “The recent updates allow us to better serve our veterans and strengthen the support we provide to eligible residents.”

The Assessor’s Office is also accepting applications for the Senior Value Protection Option, commonly known as the Senior Value Freeze. This program is available to qualifying individuals 65 years of age or older and freezes the limited property value used to calculate property taxes. While the property value is frozen, tax rates continue to be set by the applicable taxing jurisdictions. The value freeze remains in effect for three years, after which participants must reapply. Applications for the Senior Value Protection Option are accepted through Sept. 1.

Eligible property owners may be able to combine the Senior Value Protection Option with an Individual Exemption, depending on their circumstances.
