FLAGSTAFF — Even though it was on short notice, a crowd of 500 or so protesters gathered at the Flagstaff City Hall on Aug. 16, 2025 as part of the “Rapid Response: Fight the Trump Takeover” to protest the potential moves by the Trump Administration and its allies in Texas change the voting map to keep Republican in power in Congress.
The protest in Flagstaff included members of Indivisible Northern AZ and other organizations.
“Trump told Texas Republicans to gerrymander the state to add congressional seats to the map. It’s a power grab pure and simple,” Indivisible Northern AZ officials stated before the event.

Creative Flagstaff is thrilled to announce that ARTx: Art + Ideas Experience is back for 2026 — and we’re once again offering funding to bring bold, creative ideas to life in Flagstaff! Thanks to $125,000 from the City of Flagstaff’s Bed, Board, and Beverage tax revenue, this marks the 4th year of funding for artists through ARTx.
The 2026 biennial event will light up Flagstaff May 1–3, 2026 with a multi-day celebration of performances, exhibitions, installations, activations, conversations, and community gatherings — plus additional ARTx moments all year long during First Friday ArtWalks.

Get ready for a thought-provoking and deeply human experience as Theatrikos prepares to stage Rebecca Gilman’s compelling play, Swing State. Directed by AJ Flores, this powerful production promises to resonate with audiences through its exploration of complex themes including what it means to be human, the intricacies of trust, the bonds of family, whether by blood or by choice, and navigating the profound impact of loss.
Swing State tells the story of Peg, a woman who has found solace in the quiet beauty of her prairie land after the loss of her husband. Her solitary life is interrupted by visits from a troubled friend and the mysterious disappearance of her late husband’s belongings. When the authorities are called, a tense chain of events unfolds, forcing everyone to question who they can truly trust. The play delves into the cracks in our communities, revealing how national divisions echo through our most personal relationships.
F3 is excited to introduce the first speaker in our new Community Speaker Series!
This series will focus on bringing people to Flagstaff who will provide important ideas about how we can build a resilient community.
F3’s speaker series is timed to coincide with the Flagstaff community’s review of the city’s Draft Regional Land Use Plan. Public review of the Plan started this month and will continue until May 2026, when Flagstaff residents will have the opportunity to vote on it in a special election.
FLAGSTAFF — A record-breaking crowd of more than 450 took part in the 10th annual “Flagstaff Summertime Tardeada — Mariachi and Folklórico Festival” held on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2025 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.
The free event, which celebrates Flagstaff’s Hispanic culture and community history, was headlined with the return of popular all-female Mariachi Rubor, with other entertainment including opening music by Cumbre, the ever energetic Ballet Folkloroco de Colores — Flagstaff and closing dance music by New Destiny.
In between the entertainment, the event included the traditional all veterans group photo, the Dale E. Crick Purple Heart Chapter No.793 truck display, new additions to the Flagstaff Nuestras Raíces Hispanic veterans banner display; a car show, arts & crafts booths, raffles and of course tasty Mexican and other food.
Flagstaff Summertime Tardeada — Mariachi and Folklórico Festival, a traditional Mariachi Mass held on Sunday Aug. 10 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Flagstaff.
Mariachi Rubor Femenil provided the music during the Mass, which was followed by a reception in the historic basement.

FLAGSTAFF — To celebrate and recognize Flagstaff’s Hispanic roots, Flagstaff Nuestras Raíces invites the public to attend its 10th annual “Flagstaff Summertime Tardeada — Mariachi and Folklórico Festival” from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, 2025 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 224 S. Kendrick St., Flagstaff.
The event is FREE, open to the public and has drawn upwards of 400 visitors in past years.
Entertainment for this year includes the opening music of Cumbre, followed by a dance performance by Ballet Folklorico de Colores — Flagstaff, the return of the popular all-female Mariachi Rubor, with closing dance music by New Destiny.
In appreciation of all code talkers, the event will feature an official proclamation, an informational message from Eugene “Geno” Talas, U.S. Air Force, Retired, Chief Master Sergeant and special honoring songs by Clark Tenakhongva, E-6 Staff Sergeant, three years reserves, U.S. Army. There will also be a cultural share through dances and songs from a local Hopi dance group and a light breakfast and lunch will be served to attendees.
Last year, we welcomed between 150–200 families (not just children!). Free books and activities for the whole family.
At the Museum of Northern Arizona, learning is at the heart of everything we do. As a new academic year begins, we’re excited to share opportunities designed to inspire curiosity and deepen connections to the Colorado Plateau.
First, we’re pleased to offer free admission to all Northern Arizona University and Coconino Community College students from August 15 through May 15. Simply present a valid student ID to explore exhibitions highlighting the science, art, and cultures of this remarkable region.
For younger learners, our elementary school tours offer hands-on experiences with real artifacts, interactive activities, and guidance from passionate educators and volunteers. Programs align with Arizona state standards, and grant funding is available to help with field trip costs.
To kick off the school year, we invite teachers and administrators to join us for Educators Night Out on August 20—a free evening to explore MNA, connect with peers, and discover how we can support your classroom goals.

As we look to the North Rim, we can all see that the Dragon Bravo Fire continues to burn. It likely will burn for a while longer given the extremely dry conditions and the lack of monsoon rains. Many of us have deep connections to the North Rim and the people and places that make that a special place.
We are in a time of transition, with our personal experiences at the North Rim, our professional lives within the Park, and with the daily transitions that are occurring. Transitions can be hard as we leave the known and comfortable and enter uncharted territory. That is how I feel about the North Rim. I’m sure many of you feel that way too. But, transitions allow us to think differently, allow us to be unconstrained in our ideas and possibilities. That is also how I feel, and I hope many of you feel that way too.

COCONINO COUNTY — A warm summer day and a little wind didn’t keep parents and students away from the Coconino County Health and Human Services’ (CCH&HS) Back-to-School Health Fair held on Saturday, July 26 in Flagstaff.
More than 120 backpacks were presented to students who filled up their passports by visiting a variety of booths staffed by Arizona Poison Help, Arizona Trail Gear Girls, Chicano Por La Causa, Coconino Coalition for Children & Youth, Coconino County Emergency Management, CCH&HS Healthy Families, CCH&HS SafeKids, CCH&HS WIC, Flagstaff. What a remarkable summer it’s been! Last month brought two exciting milestones for United Way of Northern Arizona (UWNA) and the communities we serve.
We awarded more than $470,000 in Community Investment funds to 41 programs across northern Arizona, supporting critical services that strengthen our region. We also celebrated the 20th anniversary of KinderCamp™, our signature early childhood program that helps young learners take their first confident steps into kindergarten.

From presenters urging everyone to work together during this uncertain political time, to lessons on how to focus on your protest message, be it in interviews with media or even your own protest sign, more than 140 people crowded together at Flagstaff’s Federated Church for a “Teach In” on Thursday, July 17 as part of the “Good Trouble Lives On” National Day of Action.
The day, which honors the passing five years ago of Congressman John Lewis, featured protests and other forms of action in more than 1,600 locations nationwide. The local program was organized by the Coconino Democrats, Indivisible Northern Arizona and Lived Black Experience.
In Flagstaff, the event featured opening remarks by via Zoom by Dr. Justin R. Mallett, vice president of Inclusive Excellence at Northern Arizona University.
“We have to start sharing our stories and sharing the work we are doing collectively,” he said. “..We have to let people know that these events are for everybody…They are there for all of us.”
Message from Superintendent Keable on Dragon Bravo Fire
The recent Dragon Bravo Fire has profoundly impacted our Grand Canyon community, particularly for our colleagues on the North Rim who have bravely faced this devastating event. Many have experienced traumatic conditions, with some losing their homes and cherished belongings. The challenges have not been limited to our North Rim team; South Rim employees and the Grand Canyon community in and out of the park have felt the weight of this fire, as many have deep personal connections to the North Rim.
The destruction wrought by the fire is hard to fathom, and we acknowledge the emotional toll it has taken on all of us. In response to this crisis, we are adjusting our park management structure to better serve the needs of our affected employees, and the complex demands of the Grand Canyon. I continue to focus my efforts as the Agency Administrator of the Complex Incident Management Team (CIMT), comprised of skilled professionals who are dedicated to addressing the ongoing fire.
To further stabilize our response, we have assembled a regional Incident Management Team that is focusing on vital areas such as coordinating mental and physical health resources and planning for the ongoing needs of those affected.
As we navigate this difficult time, we are bolstered by the strength, resilience, and dedication that defines the GRCA community. Together, we will overcome these challenges.

COCONINO COUNTY — Despite scattered rains the night before, thousands of visitors crowded into downtown Flagstaff on a beautiful morning to celebrate the 2025 Annual Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce/Nackard Pepsi 4th of July Parade on Friday, July 4, 2024.
The events began with a Guardian Air Transport helicopter flying overhead leading a parade featuring more than 100 entries. The Arizona Daily Sun reported between 15,000 to 20,000 people attended the annual event.
Members of the Coconino Hispanic Advisory Council (CHAC) joined the Coconino County parade entry which featured public safety vehicles, the Majestics Car Club of Flagstaff, marching bands and other entries.

That could look like a candlelight vigil, a community event, a rally, or any other creative way you can think of to stand up and remind the world that we will continue to fight back against this authoritarian regime.

Dragon Bravo Fire on the North Rim
The Dragon Bravo Fire, located on the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park, continues to show moderate fire activity as it burns in a remote area south of the Basin near the W1 Road. Sparked by lightning on July 4, the fire has grown steadily over the past few days and is currently estimated at approximately 120 acres.

Town of Tusayan Hosts July 4th Events on Friday
Employees, friends, and families are invited to join the Town of Tusayan for an Independence Day celebration on Friday, July 4, from 4–10:30 p.m. This free community event, themed “A Community of Unity,” kicks off with a parade at 4 p.m. and highlights Tusayan’s partnerships with Grand Canyon National Park and other local agencies.
Enjoy an evening filled with food, drinks, bike decorating, kids’ games, live music, a cornhole tournament, a Native dance performance, and great auction items. The night will close with a pet-friendly drone light show at dusk.

As July heats up, I invite you to visit our newest exhibition, Shifting Life Zones. This thought-provoking show explores how rising temperatures impact plant life across northern Arizona, the birthplace of the life zone concept. Through indoor and outdoor displays, an interactive map, and insights from MNA scientists, you’ll discover how climate change is reshaping landscapes.
Summer is such a busy and lively time at the Museum. There’s something for everyone with Thirsty Thursdays, garden tours, Easton Collection Center tours, and our 2025 exhibitions alongside our galleries of perennial visitor favorites. In addition, we are welcoming kids to Discovery Camps this month. These popular day camps bring energy, creativity, and learning to MNA’s campus.
Last but not least, a heartfelt thank you to the artists, performers, and guests who made our June Heritage Festival of Arts and Culture so special. This annual celebration of Indigenous cultures uplifts our community year after year.
