Are we heading for a second wave requiring families in hotspots to once again shelter at home? Will schools reopen this summer or fall? Are parents prepared to meet additional teach-at-home challenges? How have children survived the past few months — are they feeling depressed, isolated, traumatized, both physically and mentally?

Coconino County Parks & Recreation is gearing up for another amazing Coconino County Fair, and they need your help! The Parks & Recreation Department is hiring temporary staff for the upcoming Fair, which takes place over Labor Day Weekend at Fort Tuthill County Park. This four-day event gives staff the opportunity to earn some extra money while having County Fair Fun and helping to make this annual event memorable for the entire community.

Coconino County has suffered greatly from the coronavirus pandemic. Our residents only make up about 2% of the state, but we have 6% of the COVID-19 cases and 10% of the fatalities attributed to the disease – the highest death rate in Arizona.
Add to that the economic impact of the disease. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the four industries that have been hardest hit in terms of unemployment during this time are hospitality, retail, education/health care services, and government. Those also are the sectors that make up the bulk of our jobs in northern Arizona.
The demands on our nonprofits are unprecedented. Which is why United Way of Northern Arizona established the COVID-19 Fund two months ago, and why we are teaming up with Coconino County to lead the COVID-19 Social Safety-Net Services Coalition.
The CDC has recently announced the expanded the list of wide-range symptoms for COVID-19. The mild to severe symptoms may appear 2 to 14 days after initial exposure to the virus. The expanded list of six new symptoms is crucial for individuals who are seeking testing whom must first show symptoms.
The Flagstaff Visitor Center will reopen May 22, 2020, to coincide with the Governor’s opening of the state. The Visitor Center will reopen in an effort to support and serve visitors and the community as businesses and restaurants in historic downtown Flagstaff and other parts of the city reopen.
Coconino County collected 398 tests for COVID-19 at the third Testing Blitz event held Saturday, May 16 at the Coconino Health and Human Services location in Flagstaff.
Coupled with the first two testing blitz events, the County has collected 1098 number of total tests.

The Arizona Wildlife Federation (AZWF) awarded Coconino County Board Chairwoman, Supervisor Elizabeth C. “Liz” Archuleta, the Women in Conservation Leadership award this past Tuesday for her achievements and leadership in conservation
The award was presented by AZWF Executive Director, Scott Garlid, during the May 5 Board of Supervisors meeting. Chairwoman Archuleta was recognized for her work with the conservation challenges Coconino County faces including wildfires and uranium mining in the Grand Canyon.
All the parts have arrived. We’ll head up the mountain Saturday morning to install the new and slightly more powerful 88.7 transmitter. When we’re ready, we’ll have to go off the air for a short period of time, maybe up to an hour while we move some things around and reconnect others. This will probably happen some time around noon but at this writing, there is no way to predict exactly when.

The Flagstaff City Council will discuss the allocation of Community Development Block Grant Coronavirus (CDBG-CV) funds provided by the CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security) Act and substantial amendments to the 2019/2020 CDBG Annual Action Plan at their meeting on May 12, 2020. CDBG-CV funds were allocated to the City of Flagstaff by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) specifically to prevent, prepare for, and respond to coronavirus.

The United Way of Northern Arizona and Coconino County have developed a COVID-19 Social Safety-Net Services Coalition Resource Guide.
The Social Safety-Net Services Coalition is a county-wide coalition of safety-net service providers who are working together to lead, support and coordinate Housing, Food and Emergency Cash Assistance in response to Covid-19.
The guide includes information on organizations providing Spanish-language assistance including the Circle of Page, the Page Domestic Violence Center, St. Vincent de Paul’s food boxes, utility and other services; and Williams Food Pantry and More.

Coconino County collected 287 specimens during the first Saturday of the Arizona Testing Blitz for COVID-19. 138 specimens were collected at the Coconino County HHS location on King Street in Flagstaff and 149 were collected at Fort Tuthill County Park.
Several actors from the movie “Coco”© have teamed up to send a “Thank you!” message to all the children who have stayed at home to slow down the spread of the deadly COVID-19. The artists recorded “We’re All In This Together,” a video that also asks kids to remain vigilant against the virus.
“Children are also among the unsung heroes of this pandemic,” says Carlos Moreno Jr., the actor who directed the public service announcement from his isolation at home in Los Angeles. “Our kids have sacrificed so much while staying at home. Staring boredom in the face and facing other challenges, they’ve helped to slow down this terrible pandemic.”
The Coconino County Elections Office urges voters to request an early ballot for the upcoming August 4 Primary and November 3 General Elections. “Our office wants to make sure these two important elections are conducted in the safest manner possible for our voters, poll workers and staff,” stated County Recorder Patty Hansen. “Voting by mail is extremely secure and the best method for voting in these times of social distancing.”
Coconino County Health and Human Services (CCHHS) is participating in the Arizona COVID-19 Testing Blitz on Saturday, May 2. This statewide initiative aims to test up to 60,000 Arizonans for COVID-19.
The CCHHS testing sites locations are:
• Fort Tuthill, 2446 Fort Tuthill Loop, Flagstaff, AZ 86005: 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
• CCHHS, 2625 N. King Street, Flagstaff, AZ 86004: 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

It’s different from face-to-face teaching, but it gets the job done so students can keep chipping away at their educational goals during the time of the COVID-19 stay-at-home executive order issued by Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey.
Faculty at Coconino Community College spent their Spring Breaks this year working to figure out ways to reach their students in order to keep instruction on schedule.
Coconino County has installed a Wi-Fi hotspot allowing residents of Page and the surrounding areas to access internet without charge.
The hotspot is located between the Coconino County Health and Human Services Northern Region Office and Page Magistrate Court buildings at 467 Vista Avenue.
The Coconino County Board of Supervisors enacted a campfire ban, for Coconino County, during the board meeting on Tuesday.
The ban aligns with the United States Forest Service Southern Region campfire ban which went into effect on April 22 and includes all national forests in Arizona.
Coconino County Health and Human Services (CCHHS) recommends taking precautions to protect yourself and your family from illnesses transmitted by insects and animals.
Summer in Northern Arizona can bring people in contact with mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, bats, skunks, squirrels, and mice. While these insects and animals are important to the Northern Arizona ecosystem, they can occasionally carry disease.
Coconino County Health and Human Services (CCHHS) officials confirmed that fleas collected in the Baderville area, northwest of Flagstaff, have tested positive for plague (Yersinia pestis).

Resistance. Quiet, persistent resistance.
Every once in a while, that resistance comes to everyone and everything.
As we note Earth Day this week, we are reminded of that resistance. In our stay-safe-at-home times, we are now seeing a world where the air is cleaner, the sound of nature is clearer and the Earth is actually healing itself a little at a time. There is a chilling, yet quiet beauty seeing the streets of Paris, London, Rome and New York virtually empty and nature going on quite well without us.
It’s as if Earth finally said, “ENOUGH.”

In response to recent events, the city Prosecutor’s Section of the city Attorney’s Office intends to seek substantially elevated fines and jail sentences in appropriate cases for those threatening to intentionally expose First Responders to the COVID-19 virus.
I hope this finds you all safe and healthy. I am compassionate to the fact that this entire pandemic is hitting us all differently and I want you to know we are here to help as much as we can. Our teachers are working really hard to provide quality, rigorous, standards-based learning opportunities for you children. Most importantly, we want your kids to keep learning, but we understand everyone’s situations for learning are different. If you need additional help, instruction, feedback, or just want to touch base with your teacher, please do so. Email them and request to meet–we have been allowed to do individual one-on-one google meets with students to provide instructional support.
The Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD) is hosting a Virtual Town Hall for Spanish speaking families on Tuesday, April 28, 2020.
DDD will present details about the initiatives and actions that the Division is taking to support the health and safety of members, families, and the professionals in its system during the COVID-19 pandemic.
