Flagstaff Youth Riders (FLYRS) — Spring 2024 Season Delayed

It looks like winter will not let up in Flagstaff. With another storm set for this weekend, we are going to push back our season start date to the week of April 15th. We want to make sure our trails are ready and avoid causing any damage to them. This extension will change the last week of the season to May 27-31 and will not allow for any makeup practices. We will do our best to get creative with practices if necessary so we don’t cancel any practices throughout the season.

Developing countries pay the highest price for living with large carnivores

Farmers who raise livestock depend on the health and safety of those animals. When large predators threaten their wellbeing, it can financially devastating for them—the effects of which can be felt for years. Human-wildlife conflict has been highlighted as one of the globe’s most pressing human development and conservation dilemmas, and NAU’s Duan Biggs was determined to take a deeper look into this matter. He worked with researchers from throughout the world to study how the lives of those living alongside these large predators are impacted, and why developing countries were the one to suffer most.

Applications open for NAU’s Early Learning and Development Center

The ELDC is integrating programming knowledge from NAU’s College of Education and aims to demonstrate, observe, study and teach exemplary practices in early childhood education, speech-language pathology and other related fields. The ELDC serves children aged 3–5 years old and their families, supporting their intellectual growth, social-emotional intelligence and physical development. Priority enrollment is being offered to NAU student-parents, staff and faculty. Applications for enrollment and financial assistance are currently taking place.

CCC’s Burns takes first in Mesa

Hayley Burns, runner for the Coconino Community College Cross Country Comets, nabbed first place during the Women 5K Run at the Mesa College XC Jamboree on Saturday, Oct. 1.

Respectable showings among the women’s and men’s teams positioned CCC with a third-place berth for the women’s team and a fifth-place finish for the men’s team, who bested Phoenix College, ranked 20th in the nation. Currently, CCC’s women’s team is ranked seventh in the nation among community colleges.

“The men’s and women’s teams have shown great growth over the season, and we plan on continuing that trend heading into the championship portion of our season,” said CCC Comets Head Coach Craig Hunt. “We have had some tremendous performances already this season, but I believe our best is still ahead of us.”

Olivia Konig is full of successes. She is an Honors Indigenous peer mentor with two majors—international affairs and Japanese. She’s heading to Japan in the fall for a year of work and study. She’ll come back to play piano in Carnegie Hall. She wants to be a lawyer after she finishes her degrees at NAU. And to top it all off, she won a Cobell Scholarship—an award that honors a pioneering Native American woman.

Despite a rare condition affecting her joints and muscles, Kim Kolstad was determined to participate in outdoor sports. Through her research, she discovered the Adaptive Ski and Snowboard Program, a collaboration between NAU’s Institute for Human Development and the Northern Arizona Adaptive Sports Association and one of only six programs in the world that provides its participants with TetraSkis, state-of-the-art adaptive ski equipment featuring a joystick and a breath-controlled system for turning and controlling speed, allowing individuals with complex disabilities to ski independently.

NAU’s track & field teams swept the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Championship for the second consecutive season, claiming their all-time 24th men’s title and 13th women’s title. The Lumberjacks have now swept the Big Sky cross country, indoor and outdoor team team championship titles in the same calendar year for the third time in program history. Coach Mike Smith called the weekend one that he will not forget.

Nur sets NCAA record in 5,000-meter run

Competing with some of the world’s fastest 5,000-meter runners, the stage was set for Abdihamid Nur and Nico Young to make history at Friday night’s Sound Running Track Meet in San Juan Capistrano, California. And make history they did—the pair of Lumberjacks quickly moved into the top five and held their spaces, eventually finishing in first and second. Nur finished with an NCAA record-breaking time of 13:06.32, and Young finished at 13:11.30, the third-fastest collegiate time in history.

It’s been seven years since NAU Golf’s last Big Sky Conference championship, but the team put that history behind them last week at Talking Stick Golf Club with a decisive win against Sacramento State, taking the championship and advancing to the NCAA Regionals. The Lumberjacks captured their conference-leading ninth all-time Big Sky title after what coach Brad Bedortha called “a very good year and good semester.” The NCAA Regional will be held May 9-11, and the Lumberjacks will learn their fate at 1 p.m. April 27 on the NCAA Women’s Golf Selection Show on the Golf Channel.

Visitors can enjoy numerous winter activities at Fort Tuthill County Park including snow shoeing, cross-country skiing, and playing in the snow. Every November, the NACC joins with the Office of Indigenous Student Success to celebrate Native American Heritage Month alongside Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, First Nation and Aboriginal students who have found a new home at NAU. Located near the Navajo and Hopi reservations, NAU offers a variety of events to help students, staff and faculty celebrate and foster awareness of Indigenous cultures and contributions during the month of November and throughout the year.

Coconino Community College has hired Flagstaff resident Craig Hunt to be the first coach for the college’s cross country running program, which is slated to begin its first season this fall.

“I’d like to thank Tony Williams and everyone who has helped create the cross country programs at CCC,” Hunt said. “This is an exciting time for CCC and the Flagstaff community, and I am thrilled to lead the way as the inaugural cross country coach.”
