COCONINO COUNTY — Coconino County Flood Control District participated in Science in the Park last weekend as part of the annual Flagstaff Festival of Science. The District educated attendees about the post-wildfire flood mitigation and forest restoration processes, as well as provided an interactive display for children to get a hands-on experience of on-forest flood mitigation.
Table displays included a District presentation sharing past and present projects, rain gauges for families to take home, coloring books for children, tree cookies, biomass and handouts with additional information relative to wildfire preparedness for homes.
“This is our favorite display,” Jen Rose, who was at the event with her daughter Inara, said.
At the interactive display, kids could see how water flows through a forest and different soils allow for water to absorb or run off.
“This year, it reminds me of the school field trip I took for flood mitigation,” Nine-year old Puente De Hozho student Inara Rose said.
The District staff helped answer questions about previous catastrophic wildfires and subsequent post-wildfire flooding events that have impacted parts of the County and shared previous, current and future plans to keep communities safe from future catastrophic post-wildfire floods and wildfires.
