Following a presentation by local dignitaries on April 3, 2026, those in attendance took part in the solemn ceremony (video) of placing of 113 white Prevent Child Abuse flags (video) representing the 113 children who died in 2025 (video) due to neglect or abuse in Arizona. The ceremony (video) also included the ringing of a bell (video) by members of Girl Scout Troop 4668 for each child remember during the event.
“As you look across the field today and remember each of the 113 precious children who died from child abuse or neglect, remember there are many who have survived atrocious treatment from adults who were responsible for their care,” the organization stated in its program. “Let each of these flags also represent the survivors. The Field of Hope is dedicated today to all children, that they will be nurtured to adulthood in love and safety.”
The ceremony is held in April as part of Child Abuse Prevention Month.
“We are dedicated to working together for the day we no longer have to raise any flags in their memory,” the Exchanged Club reported.
Jeff Halloway, president of the Exchange Club of Flagstaff, welcomed attendees to the ceremony, which included the reading of the Coconino County proclamation by Supervisors Tammy Ontiveros (video) and Jeronimo Vasquez (video), and the reading of the City of Flagstaff proclamation by Mayor Becky Daggett (video). It also included remarks by Coconino County Sheriff Bret Axlund (video), with Mitch Strohman serving as Masters of Ceremonies.
As is traditional for this event, the Presentation of Colors and the Pledge of Allegiance was led by members of Boy Scout Troop 33, with the singing of the Star Spangled Banner by Betty Goodwin.
The ceremony concluded with the benediction by Jill Babb (video) of Child Help.
