The City of Flagstaff has announced that ballots for the Regional Plan Special Election on May 19 have been counted and the results are in. The majority of voters chose to vote “Yes.” This means that the Regional Plan 2045 will take effect immediately as the City’s General Plan.
Turnout for the citywide election was 27%.
The County will finalize these results this Friday. Detailed election results are available on the Coconino County Elections Department website.
What’s Next?
The City of Flagstaff has provided the following information that will be of interest to residents of the city as well as the broader Flagstaff Region:
The Flagstaff Regional Land Use Plan 2045 is in effect in the City of Flagstaff as of May 20th. It replaces the Flagstaff Regional Plan 2030, which is no longer in effect. City staff will begin reviewing development applications under Regional Plan 2045* and implementing the plan’s action items.
For the County, the plan will go into effect June 3rd. This effective date was chosen when the Board of Supervisors adopted the Regional Plan 2045 on January 27th. In the County, the Regional Plan applies to an area including Bellemont, a section of Parks, Fort Valley, Doney Park, Timberline-Fernwood, Mountainaire, and Kachina Village.
All existing area plans for the City and County are still in effect, except for the Woodlands Village Specific Plan, which has been rescinded.
*All new discretionary development applications submitted to the City (such as re-zonings and annexations) and all current applications that have not yet been deemed complete will be subject to the updated plan.
Current and Upcoming City Planning Projects
City Planning staff indicate they are currently working on the John Wesley Powell Specific Plan which addresses development on 2,200 acres of primarily private land in the southeast quadrant of Flagstaff (see illustration of the project area below). Information about this Specific Plan is available here.
Staff will also be working on the Sunnyside Neighborhood Specific Plan and a Fourth Street Corridor Plan beginning this summer. Future updates on these two projects will be available at www.flagstaff.az.gov/comprehensiveplanning.
