Grand Canyon National Park (GRCA) issues statement o water system standards

The Grand Canyon National Park (GRCA) water system violated drinking water standards over the past year. Even though these were not emergencies, as our customers, you have a right to know what happened and what we did to correct these situations.

GRCA is required to monitor our drinking water for specific contaminants on a regular basis. Results of regular monitoring are an indicator of whether our drinking water meets health standards. During August 2024 and the 2nd quarter of 2025 GRCA did not complete all monitoring or testing for Total Coliform, Chlorine, and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC), and therefore cannot be sure of the quality of our drinking water during that time.

What should I do?

There is nothing you need to do currently.

The table below lists the contaminants GRCA did not properly test for during the last year; how often GRCA is supposed to sample, and how many samples GRCA is supposed to collect; how many samples GRCA took; when samples should have been taken; and the date on which follow-up samples were (or will be) taken.

Contaminant Required sampling frequency Number of samples taken When samples should have been taken When samples were taken
Total Coliform 40 samples per month 37 August 2024 September 2024
Chlorine 40 samples per month 37 August 2024 September 2024
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) 1 sample per quarter 0 2nd Quarter 2025 3rd Quarter 2025
What is being done?

The Transcanyon Waterline (TCWL) was not in operation while being repaired during a planned compliance sampling event causing a missed sample. Lab errors created unusable data for the remaining two samples. The VOC sampling was conducted, however an administrative error prevented it from being recorded by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ). Subsequent sampling was completed for each contaminant.
