| South Rim Water Update – December 11, 2025
Good news—Phantom Ranch reopens today! Crews repaired the damaged section of the Transcanyon Waterline and began pumping water again on December 8. South Rim water tanks are slowly refilling, and if that progress continues, we expect to reopen South Rim lodges in the near future.
All existing water and fire restrictions remain in effect. This includes:
- No overnight lodging inside the park
- Dry camping only (no spigot access at Mather Campground)
- No outdoor wood or charcoal fires
- Continued conservation measures for residents and employees
Xanterra and Delaware North continue to have modified hours for many food and beverage operations. For a list of current hours, scroll to the bottom of this newsletter. |

| New Study Examines How Bison Shape North Rim Grasslands
A two-year study on the North Rim—published this month—examined how bison grazing affects high-elevation meadows in Grand Canyon National Park. Researchers compared areas with many bison to nearby meadows in the Kaibab National Forest, where bison presence is minimal. Using fenced exclosures and temporary grazing cages, the team measured plant growth and nutrient levels under different grazing conditions.
The study found that, in Grand Canyon meadows, bison grazing actually increased plant growth and nitrogen content—key indicators of healthy grassland function. Plant production was about one-third higher in grazed areas, and nitrogen yield was roughly 60% higher. Even where grazing was heavy, plants continued to grow well, showing no signs of decline or long-term damage.
Environmental factors like temperature, rainfall, and soil nutrients played a smaller role than expected; bison grazing itself was the main driver of differences in plant productivity. Overall, the study found no evidence that current bison use on the North Rim is degrading grassland health. Instead, grazing appears to stimulate plant growth and nutrient cycling, offering useful insight for ongoing bison and meadow management.

Christmas Bird Count — Sunday, Dec. 21
The Christmas Bird Count, sponsored by the National Audubon Society, is the longest running citizen science survey in the world. The data collected during Christmas counts provide critical global data on bird population trends.
In 2012, Grand Canyon NP conducted its first Christmas Bird Count in nearly 30 years and made many noteworthy observations. Over the subsequent years, we have built on that success and continued to document the many reasons that Grand Canyon is designated as a Globally Important Bird Area.
On Sunday, December 21, teams of volunteers will identify and count birds in and around Grand Canyon Village. Others will hike into the inner canyon. You are invited to participate! Participants of all skill levels are welcome, though some basic level of familiarity with the canyon’s wintering birds is very helpful. Each participant should have a pair of binoculars and appropriate food/water/clothing for a winter day outdoors.
If you are interested in participating, please email Brian Gatlin at brian_gatlin@nps.gov or via phone at 928-707-3180. |
