Park Moves to Stage 1 Water Restrictions
Good news! Grand Canyon National Park has moved to Stage 1 water restrictions after improved reservoir tank levels. While this shift allows for normal operations, conserving water is still important. All employees, residents, and visitors are asked to continue using water wisely. |
| North Kaibab Trail Crew Tackles Critical Work in “The Box”
In recent weeks, the NPS Trail Crew has been completing critical infrastructure repairs along the North Kaibab Trail north of Phantom Ranch in an area known as “The Box.” This effort has focused on much-needed bridge maintenance to support safe and reliable access through this section of the corridor ahead of its March 4, 2026 reopening.
Work has included replacing bridge decking and handrails, stabilizing abutments, and repairing and rehabilitating mortar stone retention walls. Crews have concentrated their efforts on maintenance of three foot bridges and replacement of running boards on the Black Bridge. (A more extensive rehabilitation of the Black Bridge is planned with contractors next year.)
In addition to bridge work, the Trail Crew has been clearing rockslides and protecting exposed water lines as they move through the corridor. This week, the crew successfully removed a rockslide that had made the trail impassable to mules. As a result, Grand Canyon Packers are once again able to access the North Kaibab Trail and provide pack support as far as the 4th Box Bridge.
Thank you to the Trail Crew for their hard work in support of safe trails and essential inner canyon operations! |

| New Flash Flood Advisory Sign Installed Near Phantom Ranch
A new flash flood advisory sign has been installed just north of Phantom Ranch along the North Kaibab Trail to help hikers better understand current flood risk in the Bright Angel Creek corridor. The sign uses a color-coded system to show when flash flooding is not expected, possible, probable, or expected, providing an at-a-glance snapshot of conditions in an area where canyon walls narrow and water levels can rise quickly. This location is especially important following the Dragon Bravo Fire, which has increased the potential for debris movement during storm events.
Canyon rangers will actively update the sign based on forecasts and warnings from the National Weather Service, as well as real-time data from stream and precipitation gages installed throughout the Bright Angel watershed. As conditions change, the sign will reflect the current level of risk so travelers can make informed decisions before entering “The Box.”
This new signage is part of a broader effort to improve flash flood awareness, communication, and preparedness on the North Kaibab Trail and in the Phantom area. Everyone traveling in the inner canyon is encouraged to stay weather-aware and take personal responsibility for their safety. |
