Scholarships Available
Scholarships are an important part of Sedona Arts Center. It has a long history in providing students in need of financial assistance, the ability to hone their skills and creative talents. Art classes and workshops also allow an emotional break from daily life and offer social interaction with fellow lovers of art. We are proud to offer our scholarship program, with the help of The Kling Family Foundation, The Ceramics Scholarship Fund, and the Debbie Winslow Scholarship Fund, which allow us to continue this long standing opportunity.
Hands-On Hand Building with Ben Roti July 28-September 1, 2025 – Mondays 12-3pmIn this fun and creative class, suitable for both beginners and experienced ceramicists, you’ll learn a variety of hand-building techniques and explore your personal artistic vision in a welcoming, hands-on environment.What You’ll Experience:
Foundational Techniques: Learn essential hand-building methods such as slab construction, coil building, and pinch pots, to create functional and decorative pieces.
Creative Projects: Each class includes demonstrations and hands-on practice in crafting items like bowls, mugs, vases, platters, and lidded boxes, plus optional advanced projects for experienced students.
Surface Design and Glazing: Explore texturing, stamping, slip decoration, and glazing techniques to finish your creations.
Exploring and Developing Glazes with John Post July 29-September 2, 2025 – Tuesdays, 1-4pmThis course provides a comprehensive introduction to the creation and modification of ceramic glazes. Students will begin by learning how to read glaze recipes and accurately prepare liquid glaze batches. Building on this foundation, the course explores techniques for developing multiple glaze variations from a limited number of initial batches.
Ceramics Explorations: The Wheel and Beyond with Laura ‘Lolo’ Aileen Howe July 29-September 2, 2025 – Tuesdays, 9am-12pm or July 31-September 4, 2025 – Thursdays, 4-7pmIdeal for students looking to develop, strengthen, and advance their pottery skills in a playful environment. Working with the potter’s wheel, slab roller, extruder, texture tools, and more students will experiment with functional and decorative techniques, turning their creative ideas into tangible works of art.
Art History Talk–Framing the Self:
A Cultural History of Portraiture with Brandelyn Andres August 2, 2025 – 11am-12pmThrough an examination of both self-portraits and depictions of others, this lecture charts the art historical evolution of the genre of portraiture. By examining artists’ intentions, social contexts, and visual choices, we will consider how images of people not only reflect concepts of self but also shape collective understandings of identity, status, and humanity. We can learn much about ourselves as we look into the eyes of others.Brandelyn Andres is a professor of art history at Yavapai College located in Prescott, Arizona where she teaches courses on art history, art appreciation, two-dimensional design, and popular culture.
Watercolor and Ink for the Traveler with Casey Cheuvront August 16, 2025 Watercolor is a popular, flexible medium, and suitable for anyone that travels and would like to capture the beauty of their surroundings. In this workshop we will explore watercolor basics, using a journaling/sketchbook approach. We’ll cover the basics of composition, value, brushwork and color relationships, experiment with color mixing and ink drawing, and finish by working with the living landscape to create sketchbook paintings that can stand on their own or serve as inspirational notes for later studio works.At the end of the workshop, you should have begun a sketchbook of your own that you can carry virtually anywhere, which will allow you to record your travels, and your progress in this medium. Suitable for beginners and more experienced painters alike.
Introduction to Gouache with Lili Anne Laurin September 2 – October 7, 2025 – Tuesdays, 10am–12pmThis workshop will focus on enhancing the artists’ knowledge and landscape painting skills in gouache. Deepen your understanding of the medium, from its unique properties to essential tools including supports, brushes and mediums. We will explore key aspects of compositions and color strategies to harness the full potential of gouache. Instructor demos will help you grasp the techniques behind crafting vibrant engaging paintings. Whether working from photo references or your own inspiration, you will receive personalized guidance to build confidence in using gouache for plein air or studio work.
Introduction to Stained Glass with Sonja London-Hall September 2 – 30, 2025 – Tuesdays, 6–8pmIn this class students will learn how to create copper foil, stained glass art. We will learn the process of cutting glass for art or general purpose. We will learn how to use existing patterns or how make your own, along with mounting and display ideas. Students will leave the class with 1 – 3 sample projects (8 x 8 in). Some tools will be available for use but it is recommended students purchase a basic tool kit from the instructor prior to the start of class.
Painting a Bold, Colorful Southwestern Landscape with Joe A. Oakes September 6, 2025 Join award-winning artist Joe A. Oakes for a fun, info-packed painting experience.Let’s paint the beautiful mountain landscape of Arizona using bright, bold, unexpected colors! Learn to take an ordinary image and transform it into an extraordinary, finished painting. Valuable art principles and important acrylic painting techniques will be discussed while we work through and complete a finished piece. This workshop will help experienced artists grow and beginners be inspired. All painting styles and skill levels are welcome. Also open to oil and pastel painters.
Dream Keeper: Create a Surrealist Inspired Mixed Media Deck with Jesse Peterson September 12-14, 2025 Immerse yourself in the breathtaking red rock landscape of Sedona for a workshop that blends art history, introspection, and playful experimentation. In Dream Keeper, you’ll create a one-of-a-kind Dream Deck—a collection of mixed media art cards infused with personal symbolism, hidden meanings, and surrealist inspiration using collage and experimental painting and printing techniques.
Alternative Firing: A Workshop in Alternative Finishings with CJ Henderson September 14-21, 2025 This workshop is great for a first time clay experience or for the experienced potter to explore a number of new finishes. We will be using non-traditional finishes such as Raku, Saggar, and Obvara to create beautiful surface results.We will meet on two consecutive Sunday’s, the first, to create our pieces and the second to fire them.
The Joy of Painting: A Bob Ross Class with DJones September 18, 2025 Join us for a fun and accessible oil painting workshop taught by a Certified Ross Instructor—perfect for anyone who’s ever wanted to paint “Happy Little Trees” and more! This 3-hour class is open to all experience levels, and ages 12 and up are welcome with an accompanying adult. All materials are included in the price, so just bring your enthusiasm! The class takes place in the Theatre Studio at Sedona Arts Center.
