Join Iowa-based ceramic artist Adam Nielsen for a two-day, hands-on workshop in kiln conversion and soda firing at Sedona Arts Center. Day one focuses on transforming an electric kiln into a functioning gas-fired soda kiln; day two is all about loading, firing, and applying soda together as a group. Participants receive detailed handouts to support future projects, making this an accessible and practical workshop for anyone eager to expand their firing possibilities.

In today’s digital age, your iPhone can be more than just a phone — it’s a camera, an editing studio, and a powerful creative tool. Join photographer and artist Kelli Klymenko for a one-day workshop designed for both beginners and advanced users.

Learn how to turn everyday moments into striking works of art with nothing more than your iPhone. This hands-on class covers breathtaking landscapes, expressive portraits, and up-close macro photography — plus the editing apps and techniques that will take your images to the next level.

Join Barbara Dahlstedt, award-winning colored pencil artist, as she introduces three days of colored pencil techniques. Each day artists will create a different subject on a variety of drawing surfaces. Discover that exquisite detail is possible with the fine tip of a colored pencil. Realistic birds, animals, and flowers can be created with a mere flick of the wrist. Barbara will share time-saving strategies along with step-by-step instruction, reference photos, and three different drawing surfaces. High-quality colored pencils are clean, dynamic, and easy to use. In fact, colored pencil just may become your favorite fine art medium!

Join us for a fun and accessible oil painting workshop taught by a Certified Ross Instructor—perfect for anyone who’s ever wanted to paint “Happy Little Trees” and more! This 3-hour class is open to all experience levels, and ages 12 and up are welcome with an accompanying adult. All materials are included in the price, so just bring your enthusiasm! The class takes place in the Theatre Studio at Sedona Arts Center.

Move between representation and abstraction with award-winning artist Anton Nowels. Attain an understanding of how to make design decisions en plein air. Artists will explore notan, tonal plans, intervals, and color. This workshop will include discussions of artists using both plein air and abstraction in their work including Richard Diebenkorn, Eric Aho, Sergei Bongart, Maynard Dixon, Franz Kline, Monet, Josef Albers, Joan Mitchell and more. Anton will demonstrate both landscape painting en plein air and representational abstraction in the studio. All levels welcome.

Have you struggled with including figures in your drawings or paintings because they are just so darn difficult to capture? Hop on this class to learn or refine the basics of getting an accurate rendering of the figure in multiple clothed poses. We’ll work from clothed model photographs gaining increased confidence with scale, proportion, surface anatomy and foreshortening. This class will boost your figure drawing ability, widening your subject matter choices, and increasing your confidence in self expression.

One-Day Hands-On Intensive — Discover the art of Nerikomi, a captivating Japanese technique that transforms colored porcelain into intricate patterns running through the clay itself. In this immersive workshop, artist Jesse Armstrong will guide you from creating patterned clay blocks with techniques like color fading, layering, and tiling, to shaping them into cups and bowls using plaster molds and templates. You’ll also learn professional lapidary finishing methods — sponging, sanding, and polishing — to achieve a refined, high-gloss, gallery-quality finish.

Encaustic Workshop — This three-day workshop introduces participants to the luminous medium of encaustic, created from molten beeswax, resin, and pigment. You’ll learn application and manipulation techniques in a safe, supportive environment while exploring the serendipity of the process. The class includes en plein air sketching for inspiration, demonstrations, guided instruction, discussion of the history and contemporary uses of encaustic, and dedicated time to create your own works with group critiques.

Learn how to create bold and vibrant landscapes in soft pastel through a step-by-step process designed to simplify and build confidence. Each step begins with an instructor demonstration, followed by student practice, group discussion, and individual feedback. Students will start by breaking down the scene into basic shapes and value masses to create a strong composition from a provided reference photo, then move on to exploring color relationships for both the underpainting and layered pastel. Instruction will emphasize the painterly handling of pastels to develop an impressionistic style landscape, allowing students to work at their own pace, with the possibility of completing more than one painting depending on experience and speed. All levels are welcome, though the course is especially suited for beginner to intermediate pastel artists.
