COCONINO COUNTY — Coconino County Treasurer Sarah Benatar and District 2 Supervisor Jeronimo Vasquez attended the National Association of Counties (NACo) Annual Conference to help pass important resolutions that could lead to changes both nationwide and locally.

NACo represents county officials from across the United States and provides counties a platform to advocate for policy changes at the federal level. 

“As the manager of all county monies, I am concerned about fiscal policies that would impact federally awarded funds from reaching the county,” Treasurer Benatar said. “These funds help pay for the necessary services for constituents including maintaining public transportation and roads, operating public schools, enforcing building codes and providing public safety.”

Coconino County Board of Supervisors Elects New Chair and Vice Chair

COCONINO COUNTY — The Coconino County Board of Supervisors will have a new Chair and Vice Chair effective Friday, May 2, 2025.

At the end of their regular meeting on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, the Board elected District 1 Supervisor Patrice Horstman as Chair of the Board and District 2 Supervisor Jeronimo Vasquez as Vice Chair of the Board. 

The nominations were motioned by District 3 Supervisor Tammy Ontiveros, with a second from District 4 Supervisor and outgoing Chair Judy Begay.

FLAGSTAFF — With a mixture of fiery speeches, presentations featuring the importance of telling everyone’s stories and a commitment to refusing to be erased from the history books, the 7th annual Coconino Hispanic Advisory Council’s (CHAC) César E. Chávez Community Breakfast took on a more feisty tone this year.

The event, held at the American Legion Post 3, included an opening presentation of the importance of remember the community’s history presented by Dr. Pedro A. Cuevas, assistant teaching professor at the Dept. of Ethnic Studies at Northern Arizona University.

Cuevas, who is a nationally recognized, award-winning educator with more than 25 years of experience working with incarcerated felons, gang members, drug addicted teenagers and migrant families, used his own family’s history in Flagstaff to tell of the importance of the Hispanic community to the fabric of the region’s society. He drew upon the oral history tales of the NAU Los Recuerdos del Barrio en Flagstaff Collection featuring interviews by Flagstaff Nuestras Raíces member Delia Muñuz, who happened to be attending the breakfast program.

I hope you are enjoying the warmer weather as the sun begins to shine
more often. As the weather warms, it is important to keep in mind how the
changing weather will also affect the landscape of our district. It is
important to keep in mind what preventative measures we can take as a
community to protect ourselves and our community. April is coming to a
close and I would like to recognize the proclamations we have created as
the Board of Supervisors and county. I would like to honor that April is
Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Child Abuse Prevention Month, and
Earth Month. As we continue with our year, it is important to keep into
consideration the discussion and actions we have taken as both a county
and community to continue the dialogue of the issues we are facing
holistically. That said, I would like to highlight all county employees for
continuing to create discussion and honoring the topics that affect our
community.

Springtime is about renewal a time for life to re-emerge and start the cycle of life all over again. It is the calm after the storm, the dawn of light after prolonged darkness. It is a time to fortify ourselves, and prepare for the challenges of the upcoming year. We have lots of work to do moving forward. We must be prepared for the new monsoon season. Make the tough decisions around local county Redistricting. Make the financial decisions for the county budget for FY 2023. There is a midterm election where our citizens have some decisions to make about their elected officials and different bonds to support programs for our county. As the Board of Supervisors, we have the duty to listen to our constituents and lead our county through these trying times. After severing as supervisor for a year, I am honored to now serve the county as Vice Chair. It is my responsibility to provide leadership to our county staff and the citizen of our county. I am committed to growing into my new role and advocating for all Coconino County.

Each year, the Board of Supervisors elects a Chair and Vice Chair. The Board unanimously agreed at the February 8 meeting to elect Supervisor Patrice Horstman, District 1, as Chair of the Board, and Supervisor Jeronimo Vasquez, District 2, as Vice Chair.

Horstman joined the Board of Supervisors in January 2021, following her election in November 2020. …

Vasquez joined the Board of Supervisors in February 2021 following the resignation of former Supervisor Liz Archuleta, who resigned to serve in the Biden Administration.
