Disability Pride and Heritage Month

Nearly one in five individuals in the U.S. identifies as having a disability, and it is important to recognize the experiences of those people. Throughout the month of October, NAU is celebrating Disability Pride and Heritage Month. NAU’s Commission on Disability Access and Design will host events that focus on inclusivity like the accessibility scavenger hunt and sitting volleyball, along with accessibility design workshops and others, all of which are free and open to the public.

Did you know that Flagstaff is the world’s First International Dark Sky City? Organizations work to protect our night skies from light pollution and encourage community members to soak in our northern Arizona skies whenever possible. To experience the awe of the Milky Way and see planets up close, visit Buffalo Park for this year’s free Flagstaff Star Party, where there will be more than 30 telescopes and experts will speak about stars, planets and meteors. One of those experts is William Seven, leading member of the Flagstaff Dark Skies Coalition. In this blog, he speaks to the importance of dark skies and our duty to protect them.

‘It’s our turn’ to beat COVID

Feeling artsy? The “It’s Our Turn” contest is an opportunity for young adults to submit their creative take, using any artistic medium, on a health message about COVID-19 vaccinations and masks, or another pandemic-related, health effect. The contest is open to 16- to 25- year olds and will close on Oct. 16. Winners will receive a $250 prize for their creativity.

Week in review

From meetings with the President of the Navajo Nation to a hands-on experience in NAU’s SLUGG Garden, President Cruz Rivera shares highlights from his past week that have engaged his time. Other activities included meeting with the Staff Advisory Council and Faculty Senate, cheering on the Lumberjack Volleyball team and attending the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra concert.

Searching for a cure

“Research should matter to everyone,” Holly Hansen, a student researcher in the Pathogen and Microbiome Institute, said. “It allows us to gain deeper knowledge of the planet we live on and gives us answers to questions that do not yet have an explanation.” Hansen shares her path to becoming an undergraduate researcher at NAU and why other students should seek out those opportunities and describes her plan to her continue research in hopes of developing drugs to cure chronic illnesses.
