At United Way of Northern Arizona, we spend every day thinking about how to build a stronger, heathier, and more financially secure future for everyone in our region. But today I want to take a moment to talk about planning for you and your family’s future.

August is National Make-A-Will Month, and I have to admit that I was a little surprised to learn that, according to a survey done last year by Caring.com, only 24% of American adults have a will. Even more concerning? The “sandwich generation” – those middle-aged adults who are caring for both their growing children and their aging parents – are the largest cohort without an estate plan.

There are many reasons why people procrastinate about creating a will. Some might feel it’s too complex a topic, or don’t think they’ve accumulated enough assets to justify having a will. Perhaps they’re concerned about it being expensive or taking a lot of time.

The good news: it doesn’t have to be either.

United Way of Northern Arizona and United Way affiliates nationwide are partnering with FreeWill, a secure online tool that has already helped more than 1.5 million people write their wills at no cost. And it only takes about 20 minutes.

There are so many reasons to take advantage of this offer. FreeWill is a secure platform that helps ensure that the people you love are protected and that your wishes are followed – from naming a guardian for your children or pets to specifying how your property, savings, and keepsakes are distributed.

Your will also protects you by clarifying your medical directives, including who should make healthcare decisions on your behalf if you are unable to.

Of course, having a will is first and foremost about protecting your own family. But if you’d like, you can also choose to include a donation to United Way of Northern Arizona in your plans, and have your gift to our community be part of your legacy.
