Introduction to Gouache with Lili Anne Laurin September 2 – October 7, 2025 – Tuesdays, 10am–12pm
This workshop will focus on enhancing the artists’ knowledge and landscape painting skills in gouache. Deepen your understanding of the medium, from its unique properties to essential tools including supports, brushes and mediums. We will explore key aspects of compositions and color strategies to harness the full potential of gouache. Instructor demos will help you grasp the techniques behind crafting vibrant engaging paintings. Whether working from photo references or your own inspiration, you will receive personalized guidance to build confidence in using gouache for plein air or studio work.
Painting a Bold, Colorful Southwestern Landscape with Joe A. Oakes September 6, 2025
Join award-winning artist Joe A. Oakes for a fun, info-packed painting experience.Let’s paint the beautiful mountain landscape of Arizona using bright, bold, unexpected colors! Learn to take an ordinary image and transform it into an extraordinary, finished painting. Valuable art principles and important acrylic painting techniques will be discussed while we work through and complete a finished piece. This workshop will help experienced artists grow and beginners be inspired. All painting styles and skill levels are welcome. Also open to oil and pastel painters.
Creative Aging for 55+ September 8 – October 13, 2025 – Mondays, 10am–12pm
Creative Aging is the practice of engaging older adults in participatory, professionally run arts programs with a focus on social engagement and skills building. This program is for people ages 55+ and is also open to participants and their caregivers.
Explore different art mediums in this Creative Aging Sampler Class led by Sedona Arts Center artists. This class is for ages 55 and older interested in tapping into their creativity and trying out different art forms. Participants will try their hand at storytelling, drawing, painting, and more. No experience necessary! Instructors will include Claire Obermarck, Ed Buonvecchio, Patricia Saxton and Julie Richard.

Refine your skills in a supportive studio setting while working on self-directed projects.
This class offers a supportive studio environment for intermediate and advanced students ready to deepen their ceramics practice. Under Ben’s guidance, you’ll explore advanced throwing and hand-building techniques such as lidded vessels, plates, and bottle forms, while developing your own personal projects. You’ll also experiment with surface decoration, glazing, and finishing to bring your unique vision to life. Weekly open studio sessions provide extra practice time, and materials—including 25 pounds of clay, glazes, and firings—are included. One-on-one instructor support ensures personalized guidance throughout the course.

Using the potter’s wheel, slab roller, extruder, and texture tools, you’ll experiment with both functional and decorative techniques to bring your creative ideas to life. Whether you’re a beginner building your foundation or an experienced student refining your craft, you’ll gain confidence and learn essential techniques. Exploring and Developing Glazes with John Post
September 9 – October 14, 2025 – Tuesdays, 1–4pm
In this hands-on class, students will learn to read glaze recipes and accurately prepare liquid glaze batches, building a strong foundation for glaze development. You’ll explore four blending techniques—line, biaxial, triaxial, and color blending—to create a wide range of surface finishes and color effects from a limited number of base glazes. Whether you’re a beginner or advanced ceramicist, this course offers personalized opportunities to experiment with glaze formulas and deepen your understanding of glaze chemistry. Materials and supplies are provided, and class size is limited to ensure focused, individualized learning. Please note this course focuses solely on glaze formulation and does not cover application or decorative techniques.
Pit Firing: Earth, Flame and Form with Ben Roti
September 12 – October 17, 2025 – Fridays, 9:30am–12:30pm
Explore one of the oldest ceramic firing traditions in this hands-on pit firing workshop designed for adventurous artists of all skill levels. You’ll learn to create work specifically for atmospheric firing, focusing on form building with burnishing and terra sigillata to highlight surface effects. The course covers surface preparation techniques like polishing, fuming, and masking, plus the use of natural materials such as organic substances, oxides, and combustibles to create unique patterns and colors.
The class culminates in a collaborative outdoor pit firing, where you’ll experience firsthand how placement and materials influence the final results. Limited enrollment ensures personalized instruction and ample firing space. Materials—including clay, terra sigillata, and firing supplies—are provided, and students can bring bisqueware or create new pieces during class. Additional open studio time is available for building and burnishing.
Beginner to Confidence-Building Wheel Throwing with John Post
September 13 – October 18, 2025 – Saturdays, 9am–12pm
This class offers a welcoming and supportive environment to explore the art of wheel throwing. Designed to accommodate both true beginners and those with some wheel experience, you’ll learn the fundamentals of wheel throwing, including centering clay, shaping forms, trimming, and pulling handles to create cylinders, bowls, mugs, and plates.
Alternative Firing: A Workshop in Alternative Finishings with CJ Henderson September 14-21, 2025
This workshop is great for a first time clay experience or for the experienced potter to explore a number of new finishes. We will be using non-traditional finishes such as Raku, Saggar, and Obvara to create beautiful surface results.
We will meet on two consecutive Sunday’s, the first, to create our pieces and the second to fire them.
The Joy of Painting: A Bob Ross Class with DJones September 18, 2025
Join us for a fun and accessible oil painting workshop taught by a Certified Ross Instructor—perfect for anyone who’s ever wanted to paint “Happy Little Trees” and more! This 3-hour class is open to all experience levels, and ages 12 and up are welcome with an accompanying adult. All materials are included in the price, so just bring your enthusiasm! The class takes place in the Theatre Studio at Sedona Arts Center.

Discover your creative potential in this inspiring workshop with artist Crystal Marie, where ancient techniques meet contemporary artistry. Explore the timeless craft of Japanese Momigami, learning both traditional and modern approaches to hand-kneading paper to create captivating textures and tactile surfaces.
Dive into the transformative process of turning paper into stunning sculptural vessels. Guided by Crystal, you’ll explore innovative techniques to craft three-dimensional forms that embody personal themes, such as the body, a sense of home, or pure abstraction. Experiment with constructing designs both with and without permanent inner armatures, giving you the freedom to shape your vision.
