Images of the Month – April 2021

Children in Procession - Maundy Thursday
The Easter celebrations in in Antigua Guatemala are a clear example of the important role that celebrations play in the community. They draw attention and reverence from all levels of society. Hundreds of residents volunteer to carry huge wooden floats through the city streets, the church goes to great lengths decorating and preparing for the tribute to the life and death of Jesus, and families go through a truly mesmerizing collaborative process of designing elaborate carpets of vibrant colors made of dyed sawdust, intricately arranged on the streets, to cover the path of the processions.Festivities and celebrations have the capacity to override the bad, the negative, the struggles, and the injustices. They provide a sense of belonging and answer important questions related to the history and identity of the community. They provide relief from the day-to-day activities and are welcomed as events of fun, reward, hope, and harmony. They provide a reason for cohesion and cooperation, foster a culture of psychological safety and inclusion, and are an essential socializing force to individuals and communities at large: through their participation in the celebrations, everyone contributes to the strengthening and continuity of their cultures.

The need to belong has always been a part of the human condition. When we celebrate religious and secular events in our communities such as Easter, Passover, Quin Ming Jie, Ramadan, birthdays, and many others, we stimulate belonging across people of all ages, socioeconomic status, ability levels, career backgrounds, and political and religious views coming together as kinsfolks. In these challenging times, the need for unity and connection with our fellow human beings, regardless of religious or spiritual beliefs, is more palpable than ever.
