Images of the Month – June 2020

Graduation is one of the most important moments in a student’s life: it marks the transition from one stage in their educational life to another. It is a moment of pride for a student as well as for family members, who watch with a sense of satisfaction as a diploma is handed to their child.

From the perspective of cultural anthropology, graduation rituals transmit many emblematic messages: the importance of effort, hard work, perseverance, and social conscience, for example. They are also important agents of cultural diffusion through the communication of expectations and patterns of behavior and performance.

This year, the long-standing graduation custom of caps, gowns, speeches, and parades, changed radically. Students throughout the world were not able to participate in the official ceremonies they were hoping for, but they nevertheless celebrated. Even though everyone was feeling extremely discouraged and saddened by the recent turn of events, the families of these students enthusiastically supported their graduates and helped them stand out and glow.

Gina Santi Photography, in cooperation with Phoenix-based organization Kids in Focus, captured images of some of these intimate, special celebrations, as the Principals of a less privileged school in Phoenix, Arizona, United States, drove to the residences of each one of the graduating students, delivering diplomas, scholarship news, and words of admiration for their achievements.

Praise goes to the students who worked so hard, to their families for their unrestricted support, to the school staff who went out of their way to make them feel particularly special, and to Kids in Focus for continuously helping children develop a craving for growth through photography.
