City of Flagstaff launches Sustainability Leaders Program

FLAGSTAFF — In support of the city’s 2018 Climate Action and Adaptation Plan, which sets a goal of reducing Flagstaff’s greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050, the city is establishing programs and policies to improve municipal operations and provide resources to the Flagstaff community. Over the past few years, the city has worked with two groups of volunteers, known as Master Recyclers and Climate Leaders, to inspire behavior change amongst their peers. These volunteers, who are trained on local and regional issues and solutions related to climate change and consumption, have been instrumental to the city’s sustainability efforts by volunteering more than 1,700 hours and talking to thousands of their peers.

In order to maximize city resources and provide a more streamlined service to the community, the city is merging these two volunteer training programs into the new Flagstaff Sustainability Leaders Program in February 2020. As part of this Program, volunteers will receive in-depth training from experts in the fields of climate change, transportation, recycling, energy efficiency, composting, and more. Upon completing the Program, volunteers will be asked to share their expertise and inspire action amongst their friends, colleagues, and neighbors by committing to 30 volunteer hours in the community.

The first Sustainability Leaders Course is being held over ten Thursdays, from Feb. 6 to April 19, 2020. Classes will meet from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Interested community members can find more information and apply at www.flgsustainabilityleaders.org or by calling 928-213-2151. Class size is limited to 30 people.
