Coconino County Board of Supervisors Recognizes November as Native American Heritage Month

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — At a special session of the Coconino County Board of Supervisors on November 1, the Board approved a proclamation recognizing the month of November as Native American Heritage Month and highlighted several issues that impact our Native communities.

“This month we pause to celebrate and honor remarkable Native Americans who contribute to our communities,” stated District 4 Supervisor Judy Begay. “We should all rejoice in our diverse culture and celebrate the accomplishments, contributions, and sacrifices made by Native people throughout our history.”

The name Coconino is derived from “Cohonino,” the Hopi word for the Havasupai and Yavapai peoples. Coconino County includes five tribal nations and is dedicated to preserving and promoting Indigenous Peoples culture in the community, education, and workforce, stressing the importance of culture, identity, language, history, and vibrancy of traditions passed down throughout generations.

“This is such an important time and important recognition of Native people in the county,” added District 5 Supervisor Lena Fowler. “As we approve this proclamation for the month of November, our election month, it’s important to remember that Native peoples’ voting rights have not always been upheld. Since Native Americans were officially granted voting rights as American citizens in 1924, Coconino County has worked diligently to make sure our rights are protected and that our people are encouraged to participate in our Democracy.”

In unanimously approving the proclamation, the Board of Supervisors wished to send a message that a celebration of Native American heritage should not be limited to tribal lands but should be shared across the nation with all Americans. The County also empowers an Indigenous Peoples’ Advisory Council to discuss issues relevant to Native people in the county and advise the Board periodically on those topics.
