Coconino County Parks & Recreation October Update — Halloween Haunted Hike on Oct. 28

This program will provide you with an opportunity to get outside at night in our beautiful parks and open spaces. Our instructors will tell ghost stories and we may encounter some spooky things along our hike! The trip will provide a unique prospective of our local flora and fauna while getting you active!

We will hike the Solders Trail around the Fort Tuthill County Park as the moon rises about the horizon and peaks through the trees. Hot cocoa will be provided partway along our hike! Headlamps will be provided. Register here!

From September 15th to October 15th, the US celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month. The commemoration began as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson in 1968 and was expanded to cover the full 30 days by President Ronald Reagan in 1988. At the September 13th meeting of the Coconino County Board of Supervisors, a proclamation recognizing Hispanic Heritage Month in Coconino County was read and adopted by the Board.

One way to celebrate in Coconino County is to visit the newly dedicated Elizabeth “Liz” C. Archuleta County Park. Elizabeth “Liz” C. Archuleta is a descendant of Hispanic pioneers who were among the founders of Flagstaff. She is also honored in the Trailblazers Series Vol. IV, Arizona Latina Trailblazers. The park itself is a part of the cultural heritage of the region, having once been a sawmill brownfield that employed many of the founding families of the city of Flagstaff. The mill brought much of the cultural diversity that typifies the area.

Visit the Elizabeth “Liz” C. Archuleta County Park and enjoy the gardens, outdoor classroom, watchable wildlife, pond, storybook path, and other amenities.

Pumphouse County Natural Area has acquired a 6-acre expansion to its borders. This acquisition helps protect the unique wetlands and springs in the Pumphouse area, which is the gateway to Flagstaff and the headwaters of Oak Creek Canyon. Wetlands are very important to biodiversity in Arizona, accounting for less than 1% of Arizona land but supporting considerable biodiversity and ecosystem services.

The community is encouraged to visit Pumphouse County Natural Area, to enjoy the hiking and wildlife watching opportunities. In the early autumn, the site has many wildflowers, newly changing leaves, and temperate weather. The additional protections provided by the acquisition will help support the many plants, reptiles, insects, mammals, amphibians, and birds that are supported by the Pumphouse County Natural Area.
