Feb. 14 — Information event at NAU to focus on bill to restrict on campus living students ability from registering to vote

FLAGSTAFF — An information event at NAU to focus on bill to restrict on campus living students ability from registering to vote will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14 at the NAU University Union.

“Our Rep. Bob Thorpe has put forward a bill (HB2260) which threatens the ability to register to vote for those living on NAU’s campus.

Come learn about the Bill and what can be done this Tuesday outside of the Union in the Free Space section along the pedway.

Step 1 in battling this bill is getting educated… Help spread the word to all your peers, especially those living on campus.

A quick update on HB 2260:
HB 2260 would forbid students from registering to vote using a campus address. This essentially denies students the right to vote in their local communities. When a reporter asked Representative Bob Thorpe about his motivations for authoring the bill, Rep. Thorpe expressed concern about students in Flagstaff diluting the power of his supporters.

HB 2260 was assigned to both the House Government Committee and House Rules Committee for hearings. Hearings are typically scheduled in order of bill number. The February 2 agenda for the Government Committee skips over HB 2260, suggesting that the committee chair is choosing not to schedule hearings. This action effectively kills the bill. However, House bills can still be heard up to February 17. There is a chance that the bill will receive a hearing at a later date.”
