Announcing the 2020 Finalists & Legacy Recipients

With great pleasure, the Flagstaff Arts Council is pleased to announce this year’s Viola Award finalists and Legacy Award recipients, Dr. Paul Keim and Shonto Begay. To see the full list of finalists visit:

Congratulations to all! Over the coming weeks we will be highlighting each award category including two exciting new awards: Placemaking and STEAM.

Winners will be announced at the 12th annual Viola Awards Gala, Saturday, March 7, 2020 at the High Country Conference.

LOOKING BACK: WOODSTOCK 50 YEARS AGO
A FILM BY ALBERTO ENGELI

“Looking Back-Woodstock: 50 Years Ago” is a nostalgic look at the unforgettable and extraordinary Woodstock Festival through first-person accounts and interviews with Woodstock performers, attendees and organizers.A Q & A with the Director ALBERTO ENGELI and MIKE FRANKEL will follow the screening of the film. Doors are at 6:30pm and the show will start at 7pm. Tickets are $6, proceeds will benefit The Artists’ Coalition of Flagstaff, and can be purchased online or in person at Coconino Center for the Arts.

INTERMEDIATE/ ADVANCED FIGURE DRAWING
LED BY SHAWN SKABELUND

Flagstaff Arts Council presents a weekly Figure Drawing Workshop led by Shawn Skabelund beginning Monday, January 27, 2020! This Intermediate/ advanced level workshop consists of seven sessions drawing from a live model. In this course, participants will be given the opportunity to draw multi hour long poses to create finished drawings. Students will produce a minimum of three complete compositional figure drawings by using a variety of materials and mediums.
The sessions will be held in the gallery at the Coconino Center for the Arts on Monday evenings, 6-9pm. Participants must register to attend all sessions at $215 for the public, and 10% off for members.

ACTING FOR THE EVERYDAY WORKSHOP
LED BY DAWN TUCKER

Join Flagstaff Shakespeare Festival’s Dawn Tucker for a five-week workshop on best practices in communication. Those seeking to enrich their life through artistic exploration will find the class helpful in everyday matters, from speech giving to mediation to self-awareness. Acting empowers us to understand not just what we hope to convey, but what others perceive and, thereby, how to increase the effectiveness of our communication tactics.The sessions will run from February 4th to March 3rd, every Tuesday from 7pm to 9pm. Participants must register to attend all five sessions at $145 for the public and 10% off for members.

LONG-FORM IMPROV COMEDY WORKSHOP
LED BY GARRISON GARCIA 

Join Flagstaff Arts Council for a 6 week Long- Form Improv Workshop with Garrison Garcia in 2020! This workshop is designed to provide the participant with a thorough overview and foundational knowledge of longform improvisation concepts. Essential for beginners and experienced players alike, learners can expect a highly participatory and interactive experience, culminating in a student show.The sessions will run from February 12th to March 18th, every Wednesday from 6pm to 9pm. Participants must register to attend all six sessions at $200 for the public and 10% off for members.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR ARTISTS
NATIONAL MONUMENT ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAMS IN FLAGSTAFF

Leadership at Flagstaff-area National Monuments is interested in forming a working group to develop Artist-in-Residence programs at Sunset Crater, Wupatki, and Walnut Canyon.
