Flagstaff City Council passes resolution opposing the proposed construction of a border wall along the U.S. – Mexico border

FLAGSTAFF — Flagstaff’s City Council adopted Resolution 2018-05 at their meeting on Jan. 16, 2018 opposing the proposed construction of a border wall along the U.S. – Mexico border.

“We have a responsibility to bring attention to issues that impact our neighbors,” said Mayor Coral Evans. “The construction of this wall will have many long lasting negative cultural and economic effects on both the U.S. and Mexico.”

Executive Order 17367, signed on Jan. 25, 2017 calls for the construction of a wall along the U.S. – Mexico border. Per the enactments section of this Resolution, which describes the actions the City of Flagstaff may take, the City Council expressed its intent to divest city investments from companies involved in the design, construction or financing of the border wall.

“We are living in extraordinary times, which is one of the reasons we are considering such far-reaching resolutions,” said Councilmember Eva Putzova. “I am here because the Iron Curtain collapsed and I feel very strongly that it is important to speak out against proposals such as the border wall.”
