F3 Supports Proposition 438: Special Election May 17

Friends of Flagstaff’s Future (F3) believes that access to education through Coconino Community College (CCC) leads to a higher quality of life for Flagstaff and County residents, positively influences our economy, and contributes to a more  informed community. CCC is a cornerstone of our community, enriching the lives of individual citizens and of the community as a whole.

CCC provides affordable education for students of all ages and walks of life, making higher education possible for many students who might otherwise not be able to afford it. It offers educational programs that prepare people to contribute to the community in such much needed areas as sustainable green building, environmental technology, fire science, paramedic & emergency medical technician, assisted living facility caregiver, nursing, and many others.

A YES vote on Proposition 438 would provide the critically needed funding for CCC to continue to serve Flagstaff and our larger community. It will allow CCC to offer new career and technical training, allow for better job opportunities, and assist our community with much needed expertise now and into the future.

More information about Proposition 438 is available here.

Mayor and Council Elections

All four mayoral candidates (Paul Deasy, Becky Daggett, Regina Salas, and Daniel Williamson), as well as two of the candidates for council (Austin Aslan and Lori Mathews), submitted the required signatures on April 4 to qualify to run for office. A primary election will be held on August 2, 2022 for the purpose of nominating two mayoral candidates for the general election on November 8.

As required, vice mayor Becky Daggett resigned her seat on Council on April 5 in order to run for mayor. Daggett’s empty seat will be filled by a special appointment made by Council. The appointee will serve until Dec. 20 when the newly elected Council takes office. Applications to fill Daggett’s council seat are being accepted through April 20. Council is scheduled to introduce the applicants at a special council meeting on April 25, conduct interviews on April 28 and possibly May 2, and make an appointment at the council meeting on May 3.

Since there are four open seats on the council, the two council candidates who made the ballot will not face a primary election. Write-in candidates must file nomination paperwork by September 29 for the general election. Write-in candidates must receive a minimum of 1,602 votes in the November 8 election to be eligible to fill a council seat. The top four council vote getters who exceed 1602 votes will be elected to fill the four council seats.

Coconino County Redistricting

The Coconino County Board of Supervisors adopted a final County District map (Scenario F) April 13 as part of the redistricting process which began in Fall 2021. Every ten years, according to A.R.S. § 11-212, county supervisory districts must be redrawn so that each district is substantially equal in population. The selected scenario map is available here: coconino.az.gov/redistricting.

The County indicated that Scenario F unites communities of interest by bringing the Museum Fire flood area into one single district. The fire area has historically been split into two districts, complicating post-flood relief and coordination efforts. However, as the AZ Daily Sun reports, Scenario F fractures some communities of interest, specifically that of Northern Arizona University and western Flagstaff communities. It also splits Timberline from Doney Park. The adopted map will go into effect after the upcoming 2022 election cycle.

Thorpe Park Annex Design Meeting
Design discussion and activities about the future of the 8.5-acre Thorpe Park Annex parcel will take place on Saturday, April 30th from 12:00-2:00 pm on site. Participants will be able to explore the property, view a short presentation on the process, talk about compatibility of uses, and engage in a “build a park” exercise.

The Thorpe Park Annex parcel, previously the Public Works yard, is located on the corner of Bonito Street and Dale Avenue, just south of Francis Short Pond. Public feedback is essential in crafting a concept design for the future of this parcel.
