Spooky Doll
I am going to tell you a story about a recent boat journey I took through the maze-like canals of Xochimilco in Mexico City. It was a gorgeous day and at first we were encircled by thriving vegetation and stunning singing birds. Soon, however, our boat was held up by a mass of lily pads and the canal fell gloomily silent. At the end of the two-hour journey the boat turned along a curve in the waterway and I was hit by a surreal apparition of hundreds, maybe thousands, of dolls strung up from trees on this little island… The Island of Dolls. …
