FLAGSTAFF — Motorists are asked to remain cognizant of log trucks, heavy machinery and timber debris as both logging and resurfacing operations continue along Rim Road (Forest Road 300) of the Coconino National Forest’s Mogollon Rim Ranger District (MRRD).

Resurfacing work is expected to last through mid-October.

Logging operations will run throughout the next decade as part of a long-term project aimed at restoration of the C.C. Cragin watershed.

There are nine active timber sales in operation, which can be viewed on the attached map. Forest visitors should plan to encounter logging operations at any point in the Roosevelt, Baker, General Springs and McCarty sales areas, which will operate between 2023 and 2028.

Sections of Rim Road may close intermittently for logging operations throughout the next five years. Forest visitors are always encouraged to check road statuses online at coconinonationalforest.us prior to any excursion and are asked to abide by all posted signage and closures.

Forest visitors are asked to avoid recreating in both areas of resurfacing work and in active logging areas for safety reasons.

Motorists can expect to encounter a variety of road repair equipment – such as motorgraders, loaders and mini-excavators – throughout resurfacing operations.

Logging operations present dangers such as heavy falling trees, flying timber debris, slow-moving and heavy timber harvesting equipment, and fast-moving log truck traffic.

Motorists are asked to remain especially vigilant traveling around blind curves and along steep slopes where heavy equipment may be driving in the opposite direction.

Logging operations are being conducted as part of the Cragin Watershed Protection Project (CWPP), a large-scale landscape restoration project aimed at reducing the risk of uncharacteristic wildfire in the C.C. Cragin watershed.

Mechanical thinning projects, such as logging, are an important part of the Forest Service’s 10-year Wildfire Crisis Strategy, which aims to address the wildfire crisis in the places where it poses the most immediate threats to communities.
