March 8 — Coconino County hosts Colorado Plateau Economic Development Symposium

COCONINO COUNTY — Coconino County is hosting and invites the public to participate in the 2019 Colorado Plateau Economic Development Symposium which brings together the communities along the Arizona Strip, southern Utah and the Navajo Nation.

The Symposium will be held March 7 – 8, at the Courtyard Marriott Lake Powell Page, Ariz.

More than 200 business professionals affiliated with local, tribal, national businesses and community members will be present to highlight the working relationships across diverse jurisdictions and demonstrate how regional partnerships lead to opportunities. This year’s theme is “Engage Locally, Empower Regionally, Expand Globally.”.

“The shutdown of the Navajo Generating Station is imminent, so we must work together to keep our families whole and our communities strong,” said Coconino County Supervisor Lena Fowler. “I look forward to bringing people together during this symposium. It is a chance for the public to find productive solutions for our future.”

Kiva Couchon and Flint Timmins will give the keynote address. Couchon is the Director of Industry Affairs at the Arizona Office of Tourism and Timmins is a Destination Development Specialist from the Utah Department of Tourism. Couchon and Timmins will present on Advancing the Colorado Plateau as a tourism community.

Brett Schwartz from the National Association of Development Organizations Research Foundation and Jack Morgan from the National Association of Counties will discuss lessons learned from coal impacted communities from across the country.

The symposium will conclude with call to action to build future collaboration across the plateau while setting the foundation for developing deeper conversations about how regional economic development can lead to innovation and future opportunities.
