NAU Review — A metaphorical hike through a national monument, celebrating I Love Yarn day with a craft and Fit it in a Minute with Laura Umphrey

In 2009, NAU created the Southwest Virtual Museum, which put artifact exhibits, virtual tours and 3D imaging of the iconic prehistoric sites of northern Arizona online to allow anyone, anywhere to explore the art, history and lifestyles of the many Indigenous cultures of the U.S. Southwest. A grant from the National Park Service is funding the creation of a 3D model and virtual tour of one of the crown jewels of that prehistory—the Island Trail at Walnut Canyon National Monument, including the 9-Room Site, the largest and most intact site open to the public.

You’ve probably heard of an ombuds office, but you might not know what it is. To celebrate National Ombuds Day on Oct. 12, director Laura Umphrey shares more about the office and how it can help you. Can she sum it up in a minute?

Kaylin McLiverty has loved yarn for almost as long as she can remember. The Diné woman grew up weaving, knitting and crocheting with her mother, aunts and shimásání, and when she came to college at NAU, she extended that love, starting the Lumberjacks Fiber Crafts Club and doing undergraduate research about the fractals in Navajo weaving. For I Love Yarn Day on Oct. 14, McLiverty, a graduate student in statistics, talks about her legacy of knitting and how she fell in love with yarn. She also shares one of her favorite fall crafts.
