Inspiring Art Workshops
Coming up at Sedona Arts Center
A Brush with Emptiness
and the Art of Being Embodied

October 4–6, 2019
Alok Hsu Kwang-han and Tiffani Gyatso
Alok and Tiffani will guide us to return to the natural embodiment of our creative intelligence prior to thought. They will inspire us to become intimate and comfortable with not knowing and to give space for the communion of our body-brush to dance from emptiness. No prior experience with painting or with Zen is necessary.

Each morning Tiffani will lead us in a one-hour meditation that combines movement, stillness, and awareness. Relaxing deeply and resting in a spacious presence that is naturally joyful, we become more available to being “present, available, playful and not-knowing”, our methodless-method of Zen creativity. Throughout the workshop she will guide us through exercises or dance to evolve our art of being embodied.

Then Alok will serve everyone very good tea from his home province in China. The subtle delight and alertness of drinking tea together softly strengthens our collective energy field that holds us aware and safe and prepares us for the adventure of painting by “resting in presence and moving from emptiness.”

Lyn will offer a roadmap that will continue to guide your creative journey long after the workshop is over. To bring more clarity to your work. To learn to paint with intent. To continue the journey from ‘painting’ to becoming a ‘painter’. And most importantly – how to develop the mindset of ‘practice’ that leads to successful ‘performance.’ Bring your questions, your curiosity and some thoughts about what you’ve been most wanting to improve!

Plein Air Impressionism
October 19–21, 2019
James McGrew
Join James McGrew for a 2 1/2 day workshop directly following the 15th Annual Sedona Plein Air Festival! The final event of the Sedona Plein Air Festival is the Main Street paint-out on Saturday morning October 19th. James’ workshop begins at 3 pm for an evening session followed by two more days of painting and learning.

This unique workshop will focus on learning to see and interpret Sedona’s spectacular scenery and unique natural history.  James largely paints in his own style, influenced by his love and understanding of nature, and most closely identifies with the romantics and impressionists.  Learn about natural history, light, physics of atmosphere, geology, and human physiology of vision and aesthetics as they all relate to creating paintings which not only convey a visual representation of the uniquely beautiful Sedona landscape, but also convey the emotional impact of a first hand experience of painting on location.

Texture – Color – Feeling
November 4–6, 2019
Jan Sitts
Jan’s experience and enthusiasm create an atmosphere of fun and spontaneity inspiring new directions and discovery through innovative combinations of design and materials. By combining aggressive textures and unusual mediums with various “raw” materials in the abstract painting we get surprising results. The layering method yields a magnetism that is particular to mixed media. Many techniques, materials, compositions and above all emotion, play off each other in creating the work. Part of the adventure is not knowing where you are going until you get there! You will become thrilled with possibility as you journey through this process. You will learn to let go of painting habits and gain the knowledge of layering textures, colors and feelings while executing shapes utilizing a structure of positive and negative space.

Intuitive Collage: Big & Little
November 8–10, 2019
Crystal Neubauer
Whether you are an experienced artist or a novice, this workshop will dare you to let go of expectations and ignore the rules, beginning with a series of collage exercises designed to infuse freedom into your creativity and help you tap in to that intuitive voice as your personal guide.

Using ‘little’ works as small studies, we will turn our focus to a more intentional placement of elements, coming from that place of freedom and trusting what our eye and intuition knows is good, while learning tips, tricks, and techniques from a professional point of view, to translate what we see into a series of completed works on paper incrementally increasing the scale as we go.

Students will leave the workshop with a series of small 4″ studies and multiple big works of art ranging from 6″ up to 30″ in size. All works will be created on watercolor paper as our substrate, discussion will include a variety of ways to display your completed collage work when you return home.

The Inspired Abstract
November 22–24, 2019
Julie Bernstein Engelmann
Moments can become richly beautiful abstract paintings. In this workshop you’ll experience a layering technique that gives you a powerful foundation for abstract painting. You’ll enter the painting process naturally, develop a deep and luscious visual space, and weave exquisite personal marks and forms that grow from your seed inspiration. You’ll discover the spirit in your painting and learn to gently enhance its drama so it can shine powerfully. You’ll leave with two acrylic paintings that embody meaning, naturalness, and spatial depth and flow – qualities that lift an abstract painting from amateur to professional. Along the way, you’ll gain discernment and come to understand abstract painting much more deeply. Julie will give demonstrations, enlightening discussion, group critique, and plenty of one-on-one time. You’ll also receive Julie’s valuable checklist: “Critique Points for Abstract Painting,” an essential painting-rescue kit to keep handy in your studio. All experience levels are welcome.
