STARTING IN SEPTEMBER: 
Gretchen Lopez offers one-day classes on the Sedona Arts Center campus from 10 am – 4:30. Each themed class meets on a Friday with demonstrations and lots of individual attention for each student. These classes are for all levels of experience.

ONLINE: The Living Abstract with Julie Bernstein Engelmann
Online Workshop: Three consecutive Fridays: 9/8, 9/15, 9/22

In three weekly sessions, experience how to let the paint sing, navigate the “beautiful mess,” and bring your abstract painting to fulfilled completion—without losing its life force and what makes it beautiful. For all levels of experience.

Sedona Fall Colors with Betty Carr
Workshop: Wed – Fri, Sep 13 – 15

Learn to capture the beauty of light in this three-day workshop! Betty Carr teaches students to accurately portray the effect of light on any subject in watercolor or oil. Students can work in either watercolor or oils and will explore a variety of locations in beautiful Sedona.

Fallen Leaves & Silver Aspens with April Bower
Workshop: Tues – Wed, Sep 26 – 27

Come celebrate the beginning of the autumn season! Using a combination of reactive chemicals, heat, dyes, adhesives & metal leafing, students create on copper sheet, then mount on wood cradle boards for finished wall art pieces.

Abstract Figurative Online Workshop with Robert Burridge
Online Workshop: Fri – Sun, Sep 29 – Oct 1

This workshop pushes you out of your safe zone and into a brand new, looser, abstract direction drawing and painting the contemporary nude. If you ever wanted to learn how to paint the freestyle abstract figure, this workshop is for you!

CERAMICS STARTING IN SEPTEMBER: 

These sessions are 5-week courses focus on developing, strengthening and advancing one’s skills in this down-to-earth medium. Tuition includes one 25 lb. bag of clay, and students can also attend one Open Studio session per week. Come play in the mud this fall!

FIELD EXPEDITIONS
Field Expeditions are created around the idea of a perfect match between an artist, a special place and the best season to explore that location. We work with local resources and providers to create an exclusive one-of-a-kind experience for participating artists/students. Field Expeditions are designed with expert instruction and support staff. There is no replacement for experiencing life directly with great instruction in a unique location!
iPhoneography at the Grand Canyon, South Rim – with Kelli Klymenko
Field Expedition: Sat – Sun, Sept 30 – Oct 1

Kelli Klymenko is teaching this two-day workshop for beginner and advanced students at the magnificent South Rim of the Grand Canyon! He’ll teach you how to push yourself beyond the basics and learn to shoot professional quality photographs using only your iPhone.

Zion National Park: Plein Air Workshop with James McGrew
Wed – Sat, 11/1 – 11/4

Join James McGrew for a 4-day workshop at majestic Zion National Park and surrounding area located in Utah! This unique workshop will focus on learning to see and interpret Zion’s spectacular scenery and unique natural history. One of the greatest struggles of landscape painters is to convey in small scale, the grandeur of a dramatic landscape.  Learn how to interpret such scenes and create illusions of depth, three dimensionality, scale with strategic details to make a scene come to life.

LOOKING AHEAD:
Watercolor Crash Course: Capturing Luminous Light with Betty Carr
Class: Wed – Thurs, 10/4 – 10/5

This class welcomes beginners who have some drawing experience and want to learn how to paint with watercolor, as well as the more experienced painters who want to learn more watercolor techniques. With materials included, all barriers have been removed so that you can explore the fun of painting!

Junk Journal Deconstruction with Nicole Austin
Mon – Tues, Oct 2 – 3

We’ll take an ordinary vintage book and turn it into something extraordinary using paint, embellishments, and reconstructive techniques. You bring the book, (BYOB!) and I’ll supply the rest! Each part of the book will be put to good and new uses as we deconstruct our books and reconstruct them into fabulous works of art.

Oil Sketching at Tlaquepaque, Sedona with Gretchen Lopez
Thurs – Fri, Oct 5 – 6

All the joys of Mexican color and architecture can be experienced here right here in Sedona.  Join me for a Plein Air journey as we explore beautiful Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village in Autumn!  I will show you how to work with oil sketches to gather information on sight and complete larger paintings in your studio!

Zen Creativity: The Art of Life and Death with Alok Hsu Kwang-han
Fri – Sun, Oct 6 – 8

In this workshop we engage in Zen creativity to explore the art of life and death. Using specially made Chinese brushes, ink, and paper – all provided for you to use and keep after the workshop – Alok will ask you to paint things that are impossible to paint so that you can be comfortable with not-knowing and be available to the intelligence and creativity prior to thought.

If you want to paint effortlessly – Free from stress and better able to let the magic flow, this is the place to start.    You will come to understand how to create more comfortably, confidently and joyfully while learning all the tips and techniques that have taken me years of cultivation.  No more guessing!  No more uncertainty!  No more fear!  Just SUCCESS.

Texture-Color-Feeling with Jan Sitts
Thurs – Sat, Nov 2 – 4

Jan’s experience and enthusiasm create an atmosphere of fun and spontaneity inspiring new directions and discovery through innovative combinations of design and materials. By combining aggressive textures and unusual mediums with various “raw” materials in the abstract painting we get surprising results. The layering method yields a magnetism that is particular to mixed media.

Mixed Media Transfer I with Michele Sales
Thurs, Nov 2

In this six-hour workshop you will learn to transfer images from various sources such as magazines, photographs, and ink or laser jet images onto cradled wood board and canvas utilizing transfer paper. Many of the transfers created in this workshop can be incorporated into other images.

Michelle is also teaching a 2-day Mixed Media Transfer II workshop Dec. 14 – 15.

Oil Over Acrylic with Phil Garrett
Thurs – Sat, Nov 9 – 11

One of the first issues in this approach to Oil over Acrylic is which comes first! It’s the Acrylic! In this 3-day workshop we will explore strategies for combining the expedience of an Acrylic Imprimature (Colored Ground) and further refined Acrylic Underpainting with layers of Luscious Oil Overpainting and Glaze.

Poetry of Grief and Healing with Jodie Hollander
Monday, Nov 13

For centuries, creating art, and writing poetry in particular, has served as a form of healing for hurt, pain and grief. In this workshop, we’ll discuss examples of celebrated poems that tackle these difficult topics and study effective techniques for channeling our pain into poetry.

Loose Realism and Dynamic Composition with Sarah Sedwick
Sat – Mon, Dec 9 – 11

Paint looser and more confidently during this three-day workshop. Take a step-by-step approach to alla prima oil painting, from black-and-white studies to brilliant color. Build a beautiful composition with life and movement, and get a new perspective on the still life.
