Latino Outdoors — Yo Cuento: Latinx Heritage Month

Latino Outdoors continues to celebrate Latinx Heritage Month 2022!

Known also as Latino Heritage Month and Hispanic Heritage Month, this month “traditionally honors the cultures and contributions of both Hispanic and Latino Americans as we celebrate heritage rooted in all Latin American countries.” Latinx Heritage Month starts on Sept. 15th and goes until Oct 15th. every year.

¿Por qué el 15?

This date is significant because it is the anniversary of the independence of Latin American countries including: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico and Chile also celebrate their independence on Sept. 16 and Sept. 18.

LHM continues until October 15th and LO has numerous events already planned!

Latino Outdoors — Yo Cuento: somos semillitas of the Earth

This week, we are joining communities around the country and across the world to celebrate día de la Tierra.

The environmental movement has grown, evolved, and become more diverse since the first Earth Day over fifty years ago, and people everywhere are growing to better understand our intimate relationship with our beautiful planet. Somos semillitas and the earth can nourish us in awe-inspiring ways if we honor that relationship. These are hopeful signs and reasons to continue working towards a healthier, more sustainable, and balanced environment for ourselves, for our children, and for our children’s children.

Starting this weekend, join us in celebrating youth and familias outdoors, the spirit of conservation, and the promise of the future us.

Latino Outdoors — Semillitas Outdoors: Para Los Niños

Did you know? Providing Latinx youth with increased opportunities to connect with the outdoors and access to leadership spaces can help them develop their own leadership abilities. This year, we are introducing a new initiative called Semillitas Outdoors, a weeklong celebration of Latinx children in the outdoors

From April 23 through May 1, Latino Outdoors will offer virtual and in-person activities that center the experience of Latinx children and their families.

Join us as we support and celebrate children’s access to the outdoors and leadership spaces, and build positive connections to the process of getting outside!

Latino Outdoors — Yo Cuento: Zapatos para la nieve

“Coming here to the nature helps me, it gives me energy. When I’m coming here and I see my family coming here, they come back a little bit happier and I think that’s part of the healing process for us. When we are in the cities, we are always doing activities, running, school, work. Here is a time to relax, it’s a time for us to be able to appreciate what we have around us. It’s a time to spend time with ourselves and lately we don’t have a lot of that time. So make the time, go outdoors.” – Ángeles Arroyo, LO outing participant.

This past month, Latino Outdoors Los Angeles and Los Padres ForestWatch teamed up to take Latinx families on a snowshoe hike to Mt. Pinos in the Angeles National Forest.

Latino Outdoors — Yo Cuento: Bajo Los Redwoods

In 2021, Latino Outdoors leaders from around the United States gathered along California’s north coast for our annual leadership campout following a year of physical distance. Bajos Los Redwoods provides insight into our experience in community and connection.

Latino Outdoors — Yo Cuento: Cascadas y Conchas

LO Portland hiked the Tamanawas Falls on January 2, 2022 to ring in the new year. While hiking the falls, located within Mount Hood National Forest, the group stopped and snapped this picture.

LO Leader Kassy Delgado reflected on the hike afterwards “Enjoying conchas, tamales, and dulces while admiring a wintery waterfall, what a wonderful way of welcoming 2022!”

Conchas y Cascadas for the new year? Que maravillosa!

Latino Outdoors — Yo Cuento: Mapping Migraciones
