NAU gets $5M grant to fund new wildfire initiative

The Arizona Wildfire Initiative is an all-hands-on-deck effort to deal with wildfires through a multipronged approach: more and better trained forest and fire managers; intentional forest management to reduce the risk of destructive wildfires; ensuring people on the ground have the knowledge they need to handle the increasing number and severity of wildfires as the West dries out and heats up; and building fire-resilient communities throughout Arizona. This innovative project is funded by the Office of the Governor.

What altered snowfall means for ecosystems

Mountains in the western U.S. are seeing less snowfall, earlier snowmelt and warmer, longer summers. These changes will affect the activity of plants and microorganisms, both of which break down organic matter and release carbon dioxide into the air, but we don’t know exactly how ecosystems will be affected. A grant from the Department of Energy will allow an NAU biogeoscientist to better predict the changes we may see in ecosystems in the coming years.

It was a blue and gold night at Chase Field Sunday night, when NAU alumni showed up to support the Arizona Diamondbacks at the annual alumni game. See Louie the Lumberjack try his hand at baseball and all the Lumberjack alumni who helped cheer the D-Backs to victory against the Padres.
