Nunsense Opens to Standing Ovations
August 2022
Nunsense Actors Excited to be Back on Stage
As we emerge from the pandemic, this is the first time some of our cast has been on stage in quite some time. “It’s exhilarating to be back on stage. Although the pandemic is far from over, it reminds me of how resilient the art community is in Flagstaff,” said Caitlin Burd, who plays Sister Mary Amnesia.
Mark Hanson, who plays Sister Mary Hubert, said, “Performing for me is like church. And with this show, Nunsense, we expect to do the same for you.” Tianna Cox, who plays Sister Mary Leo, said being back on stage is, “good for my soul.”
Susan Chastain, Reverend Mother, has been on our stage for many shows. “Being on stage for this show is so much fun,” she said. “The audience is sure to get lots of laughs.”
Nunsense opened to standing ovations and runs now through August 14.
“Congratulations Theatrikos Theatre Company and the city of Flagstaff! It is great seeing a theatre with a plan for long term sustainability and presence, and a city that values the impact that an artistic organization has on the community. Break legs, for the next 25…50…75 years, and beyond!”

Kids Grow Doing Theatre Performance Workshops
“Juniper knows all the lyrics to Anastasia”
“Juniper has 100% caught the theater bug. She has been playing the Anastasia soundtrack (Broadway version, not the animated movie) non-stop in our house since attending the TheatriKids performance earlier this month. She knows ALL the songs and ALL the parts now….I also do at this point, lol,” said her Mom Beth Hickey.
Mom said, “I surprised her with tickets to the Lion King at Gammage this past week and she was blown away, but said she prefers her local theatre 😊 On the way home she asked if Encanto camp could start a week early so she could go back to the Theatrikos sooner. Thank you so much for offering theatre programs and camps for kids. This is the first extracurricular activity I’ve seen her this excited and passionate about. She can’t wait for Monday!”
Auditions for TheatriKids Be More Chill are August 22—23. We’ll see you then Juniper!
Dream for the Future
After 50 years, why did Theatrikos get a new lease? So we could plan better for the future. It’s hard to ask donors for large contributions when we’re only guaranteed to be at Doris Harper-White Playhouse for a short time. Now that we’re going to be here for a long time, we can dream for the future. The city will do maintenance on DHW Playhouse. But we have to do improvements. What are those improvements? What do you dream of those improvements being? From a facilities standpoint, what should be our dream for the future? Everyone is welcome to join the discussion.
Improv Classes
Theatrikos weekly improv classes, taught by director John Propster, resumed this week after the summer break. All ages and experience levels are welcome to participate in improv games and exercises.
50th Anniversary Dinner
In 1972, Theatrikos was founded in the Gopher Hole at the Weatherford. In honor of this history, we’re having our 50thanniversary dinner at the Gopher Hole, too. Saturday, September 10 at 5:30 pm. Seating limited. Choice of prime rib, salmon or vegetarian lasagna.
Concessions – Signage – Ukraine Theatre
New Concessions Stand
While the theatre was closed during the worst of the pandemic, among many improvements, technical director Larry Gould built the new concessions stand, replacing the old one that was housed in an old elevator shaft.
Unveiling New Signs
Last month, Theatrikos’ old weatherworn signs were removed and our absolutely fabulous new signs for Doris Harper-White Playhouse were installed. They’ll be unveiled with a champagne toast on September 10 at 4:30 pm, just before our 50th jubilee dinner.
The Show Goes on in Ukraine
For the first time since the war began, Ukrainian actors from bombed Mariupol theatre return to the stage in another Ukraine city with Cry of a Nation.
New Lease Enables Long-Term Planning
On July 5 the Flagstaff City Council approved Theatrikos’ new 25/50/75-year lease. Our new lease is for 25 years with two optional renewals to 50 and 75 years. As Theatrikos celebrates our 50th anniversary in 2022, this new lease on Doris Harper-White Playhouse provides greater permanence that will enable increased fundraising and improved facilities management. Most importantly, these in turn will ultimately lead to an enhanced artistic theatrical experience for the Flagstaff community.
We are very grateful to the City Council and city staff for navigating the process that made this possible. We are also very grateful to Theatrikos cast, crew, staff and volunteers who worked on this.
This was a process that began more than three years ago. After our sewage flood, we made a commitment to long-term planning and to building back better than we were before. This requires increased fundraising and better planning. And those things required a new longer-term lease. Now, donors are assured that their support will keep Theatrikos running for the long haul. Members now also know that they’re joined in their support by thousands of people throughout the Flagstaff community—and with the support of the city itself.
As part of our 50th Anniversary celebration, Mayor Deasy will join us for a public signing ceremony on Saturday, September 10 at 4:30 pm.  The entire city is invited to come celebrate with us.
