FLAGSTAFF, Ariz — During the Jan. 20, 2026 Council meeting, the Flagstaff City Council approved a grant from the Arizona Department of Public Safety in the amount of $285,000 to fight against drug trafficking, human smuggling and other criminal activity. This funding is not related to, nor will it be used for immigration or the enforcement of immigration laws.
Specifically, $150,000 of the funding will be used to cover overtime expenses for detectives and officers focused on solving crimes related to gang activity and narcotics trafficking. The remaining $135,000 will fund the purchase of two investigative vehicles to aid in solving those crimes. These vehicles will only be operated by Flagstaff Police Department personnel and will be used for investigative support only.
Operations funded by this grant remain strictly under the local authority of the Flagstaff Police Department (FPD) and acceptance of this grant does not alter local law enforcement policies.
The mission of the FPD is to protect and preserve life, property, and public order through elite service. The FPD does not enforce federal immigration laws. If a member of the community has concerns about an interaction with law enforcement, they are encouraged to contact the Flagstaff Police Department directly. We remain committed to public safety, transparency, and open communication with our community.
