APS Public Safety Power Shutoff anticipated in the Flagstaff area Saturday, June 27

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz – The City of Flagstaff has been informed that unless there is substantial improvement in weather predictions, Arizona Public Service (APS) will initiate a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) in parts of the Flagstaff area Saturday, June 27 as early as 10 a.m. Some areas in Flagstaff will lose power during this PSPS event. Customers who are impacted have been directly notified by APS.

FLAGSTAFF — Prior to the November 3, 2026 election, each household with a registered voter will receive an informational pamphlet that includes arguments for and against proposed questions that have a local impact. Any person interested in submitting an argument is required to do so before 5 p.m., Arizona time on Aug. 5, 2026.

FLAGSTAFF — Flagstaff City Hall offices at 211 W. Aspen Ave. will be closed on Friday, June 19 in honor of Juneteenth National Independence Day. City Hall offices will reopen on Monday, June 22 at 8 a.m.

Greater Flagstaff Region seeks public input for its Community Wildfire Protection Plan Update

FLAGSTAFF — There will be a virtual public meeting on Thursday June 25, from 6 – 7 p.m. to solicit public input for the Greater Flagstaff Region Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) update. Attendees should register online in advance. The CWPP is a community-driven planning effort that will assess wildfire risk across the Greater Flagstaff Region and identify strategies to improve wildfire preparedness, mitigation, response coordination, and recovery.

City of Flagstaff transitioning from residential curbside glass collection to drop-off locations

FLAGSTAFF — On July 1, the City of Flagstaff will be transitioning from the residential curbside glass collection program to a drop-off model. Six drop-off locations are now available City-wide for residents to deposit glass products to be recycled. This change is being implemented to optimize collection operations and improve operational efficiency. There are no changes for commercial customers at this time.

City of Flagstaff — Pedestrian Improvements to Begin along Soliere Avenue

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz – Starting the week of June 1, the City of Flagstaff, in partnership with Mountain Line and their contractor, Kinney Construction Services, will begin pedestrian crossing improvements in multiple locations along Soliere Avenue. These improvements are part of the “First Mile, Last Mile Initiative” which aims to add safe pedestrian infrastructure near Mountain Line bus stops throughout the City. Most of these crossings will feature a pedestrian refuge median, meaning pedestrians will only need to cross one lane of traffic at a time.

New program launches to help Flagstaff homeowners go solar, lower energy bills

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — The City of Flagstaff has launched the Northern Arizona Switch Together Co-op, a group-buying program for solar installations that has secured a 17% discount, translating to an average price reduction of $5,200. Homeowners and small businesses may also add-on battery storage and electric vehicle chargers.

“The City of Flagstaff is helping households and small businesses lower their energy bills by going solar,” said City of Flagstaff Mayor Becky Daggett. “By making the ‘Switch Together,’ neighbors can leverage the power of bulk buying for discounts on solar installations, battery storage, and EV chargers.”

Flagstaff City Council approves 2026 Community Development Block Grant Funding

FLAGSTAFF — The Flagstaff City Council has approved the City’s 2026 Annual Action Plan for the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, authorizing approximately $881,000 in federal funding for projects and programs that support homelessness response, neighborhood improvements, and community resilience. The funding allocations include investments in shelter operations, domestic violence services, park reconstruction, resilience hub improvements, and ADA accessibility upgrades that will benefit low- and moderate-income residents throughout Flagstaff.

Community celebrates grand opening of Multicultural County Park Sculpture Exhibition on May 19

FLAGSTAFF — The City of Flagstaff and Coconino County celebrated the opening of the third annual Multicultural County Park Sculpture Exhibition on Tuesday, May 19 at Elizabeth “Liz” C. Archuleta County Park.

“This year’s exhibition features large-scale sculptures by artists Pamela Ambrosio, Anjola Ayodele, Robert L. Barnum, Nathaniel Trygg Patterson, and Joe Ray,” the city reported in a media release. “Artworks reflect diverse cultural representation and explore themes of nature, history, and inclusivity. Together, they infuse the park with an engaging visual experience that highlights storytelling and community, while inviting the public to experience the park in new ways.”

City of Flagstaff — Stage 1 Fire Restrictions begin on May 21

FLAGSTAFF — The City of Flagstaff will enter Stage 1 Fire Restrictions at 8 a.m. on Thursday, May 21, 2026. 

Under Stage 1 Fire Restrictions,

Permits for open burning within the City will not be issued.
The sale or use of consumer-grade fireworks is prohibited.
The use of charcoal and wood-fired BBQs are prohibited in City parks and open spaces.
Use of fire pits and other open flame devices without an on/off switch are prohibited on Red Flag Warning days, as issued by the National Weather Service.

Flagstaff voters approve Regional Plan 2045

COCONINO COUNTY — Results for the May 19, 2026 Special Election indicate that a majority of Flagstaff voters chose “Yes” on Question 492, ratifying the Flagstaff Regional Land Use Plan 2045. This means that the Plan will be in effect in the City of Flagstaff following the official canvass of the election, which is expected to occur at the June 2 Flagstaff City Council meeting.

City of Flagstaff — Section of Cedar Avenue to close from May 29 – 31 for final roadway striping

FLAGSTAFF — Cedar Avenue will close to all traffic, from West Street to the Fourth/Lockett roundabout, from Friday, May 29, through Sunday, May 31, to allow crews to safely perform final roadway striping. Cedar Avenue and the Fourth/Lockett roundabout will reopen on Monday, June 1.

This closure will allow crews to safely perform final roadway striping along Cedar Avenue and within the Fourth/Lockett roundabout, as the striping that was completed last fall was temporary for the winter months. This striping effort will be the final work along Cedar Avenue as part of the Spruce Wash Suite of Projects.

City of Flagstaff, Coconino County celebrate year three of the Multicultural County Park Sculpture Exhibition opening May 19

FLAGSTAFF — The City of Flagstaff and Coconino County announce the opening of the third annual Multicultural County Park Sculpture Exhibition Tuesday, May 19, at the Elizabeth “Liz” C. Archuleta County Park in Flagstaff. A reception begins at 10 a.m. and includes a welcome by Vice-Mayor Miranda Sweet and remarks by City and County officials and participating artists. The event is free and open to the public.

City of Flagstaff — Return Your Ballots for the Regional Plan Election!

The Regional Plan Special Election ballot asks voters in the City of Flagstaff to vote on whether to ratify or not ratify the Flagstaff Regional Land Use Plan 2045. 

Your ballot must be received by the Recorder’s Office no later than 7:00 pm on Election Day, Tuesday May 19, 2026. Postmarks do not apply when considering this deadline. There are no polling places on Election Day.

Sandbag cleanup operations for Sunnyside and Grandview Homes starting in late May

FLAGSTAFF — The City of Flagstaff will launch a one-time sandbag clean up operation throughout the Sunnyside and Grandview Homes neighborhoods, in the areas shown on the map. Residents of Sunnyside and Grandview Homes are instructed to move their sandbags debris to the curb (within City Right-of-Way) in front of their property. City of Flagstaff crews will remove this sandbag debris between May 26 and June 8. 

Residents who want to remove their sandbag debris early can bring them to the City’s Cinder Lake Landfill (6770 E Landfill Rd). The City will waive the landfill fee for all sandbag debris. A copy of the resident’s municipal water bill is required for address verification. 

City of Flagstaff — Data centers zoning code update

FLAGSTAFF – – The City recognizes that data centers are a topic of significant interest for Flagstaff residents. City staff have been actively evaluating ways to safeguard the community by addressing possible impacts associated with data centers, including water use, energy demand, and other critical resources.

During the May 5 Public Hearing on data centers, staff provided the City Council with an update on a potential zoning code text amendment related to data centers. Given the importance of the issue, staff requested additional time to conduct broader public outreach and allow for more extensive community input. This additional time will also be used to further research available options. Staff will return to both the Planning and Zoning Commission and the City Council at a future date to share community feedback and receive further direction.

City of Flagstaff to begin roof replacement at Historic Milligan House

FLAGSTAFF — The City of Flagstaff will begin a roof replacement project at the historic Milligan House, located at 323 W. Aspen Avenue, starting Monday, May 11. The project is expected to take approximately one week to complete, weather permitting.

The Milligan House, built circa 1904, has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the Department of Interior. It is architecturally significant as a unique representation of Victorian residential architecture in Flagstaff and carries additional significance for its connection to James C. Milligan, a local brickmaker and building contractor who played a major role in shaping Flagstaff’s historic commercial and residential landscape.

City of Flagstaff — Jennifer Stasinopoulos named City – County Library Director

FLAGSTAFF — The City of Flagstaff has named Jennifer Stasinopoulos as the new Library Director for City and County Services. She will begin this role effective April 12, 2026.

Economic Vitality Director Heidi Hansen said “Jennifer has over a decade of library leadership experience and has had great success overseeing library city services since 2024. She is ready for this next step with directing both the city and county library district. She was selected from a pool of 27 qualified candidates and participated in a rigorous recruitment process, including a screening interview, an in-person panel interview, and a community meet and greet. I am excited to have Jennifer in this new role, I know she will do wonderful work.”

City of Flagstaff to begin construction of new Montalvo STEM education community center

FLAGSTAFF — The City of Flagstaff and its contractor, Loven Contracting, Inc. are set to begin construction of the Montalvo Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Education Community Center located at 211 E. First Avenue the week of April 20. Construction is anticipated to be completed by late 2026.

This redevelopment and community enhancement project represents an exciting step forward in providing educational opportunities and community space for Flagstaff residents. The new facility will serve as a hub for learning, innovation, and connection.

Pine needle drop off beginning April 3 in Railroad Springs, additional neighborhoods to follow

FLAGSTAFF — The Flagstaff Fire Department and the City of Flagstaff Public Works Division are facilitating the placement of roll off dumpsters in neighborhoods around the City to allow residents to dispose of pine needles near their homes. This project follows the success of last year’s initiative. The Flagstaff Fire Department recommends that residents remove excess pine needles from their yards and areas near their homes to lower the risk of catastrophic wildfire.

League of American Bicyclists renews Flagstaff’s silver-level Bicycle Friendly Community status

FLAGSTAFF — The League of American Bicyclists has honored the efforts of Flagstaff to build better places for people to bike with a Silver-level Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) award. The award recognizes Flagstaff for its commitment to creating transportation and recreational resources that benefit residents of all ages and abilities while encouraging a variety of transportation choices. 

Greater Flagstaff Community Wildfire Protection Plan undergoing update

FLAGSTAFF — The City of Flagstaff and its partners have launched a process to update the Greater Flagstaff Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP). The City received a grant in 2025 to update the Plan and hired SWCA Environmental Consultants to lead the update. The primary goal of this effort is to develop an actionable plan that communities can use to feel empowered in protecting themselves, their loved ones, and their property.

Flagstaff City Council supports defined protocols for interactions with federal agencies

FLAGSTAFF — During the March 3 meeting, the Flagstaff City Council received information about protocols to be utilized during interactions with federal agencies. These protocols include a directive on the use of City property by outside agencies, a notice to guide City employees if federal law enforcement personnel visit a City workplace, and a form for members of the community to report concerns. Staff also reiterated that the Flagstaff Police Department does not enforce federal immigration laws but also cannot interfere with or prevent lawful federal activities. 

Roadwork to begin on Butler Ave and Lone Tree Road as part of Lonetree Overpass Project

FLAGSTAFF — The City of Flagstaff and its contractor, Ames Construction, will begin the next phase of the Lone Tree Overpass project on Monday, March 2. The project area is Butler Ave. between O’Leary St. and Lumber St. and Lone Tree Rd. between Butler Ave. and Sawmill Rd. The work entails roadway reconstruction, installation of water line, sanitary sewer, and storm drains, improvements to concrete curb and gutters, sidewalks, and driveways, and re-alignment to add bike lanes and multi-use travel paths. The work is expected to be completed in December 2026.

City of Flagstaff Public Works Director Scott Overton receives leadership credential

FLAGSTAFF — City of Flagstaff Public Works Director Scott Overton recently graduated from the Arizona City/County Management Association (ACMA) Management Academy. The Academy is a statewide program offered by ACMA that provides intensive leadership and management training within the context of local government to help build the leadership development pipeline. The program is 10-months long and includes topics of study such as stakeholder relationship management, legal frameworks, municipal budgets, workforce planning, and communications.

FLAGSTAFF — The City received confirmation on Feb. 19 that all Flock Safety cameras covered under the City’s contract have been physically removed. 

The Flagstaff City Council voted in December 2025 to terminate the City’s contract with Flock Safety for automated license plate recognition technology. Following that decision, all cameras covered under the contract were immediately turned off and stopped collecting data.

City of Flagstaff provides clarification on DPS grant

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz — During the Jan. 20, 2026 Council meeting, the Flagstaff City Council approved a grant from the Arizona Department of Public Safety in the amount of $285,000 to fight against drug trafficking, human smuggling and other criminal activity. This funding is not related to, nor will it be used for immigration or the enforcement of immigration laws.

FLAGSTAFF — The Flagstaff City Council voted in December 2025 to terminate the City’s contract with Flock Safety for automated license plate recognition technology. Following that decision, all cameras covered under the contract were immediately turned off and have not collected any data since.

City of Flagstaff announces Flock Safety/ Automated License Plate Recognition Technology update

FLAGSTAFF — The Flagstaff City Council voted to cancel the City’s contract with Flock Safety for automated license plate recognition technology in December 2025. The cameras included in the City of Flagstaff’s contract were deactivated at that time. 

As of January 2026, City staff and Flock Safety representatives are working to facilitate the physical removal of the cameras as soon as possible.

City of Flagstaff announces Program Year 2026 Community Development Block Grant

FLAGSTAFF — The City of Flagstaff receives Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds annually from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Flagstaff utilizes CDBG funds to provide various public services as well as housing, infrastructure and public facility improvements. 

CDBG funds are a vital resource for strengthening communities and improving quality of life. The City of Flagstaff invites residents, community stakeholders and local organizations to participate in the upcoming public meeting and public hearings regarding the HUD Community Development Block Grant Annual Action and Consolidated Plans. 

City of Flagstaff announces public art opportunity at Buffalo Park

FLAGSTAFF — The City of Flagstaff invites artists and artist teams to submit Statements of Qualifications to design and execute a large-scale mural on a water tank at Buffalo Park, located at 2400 N. Gemini Road. The application deadline is Feb. 17, 2026, at 5 p.m. Mountain Time.

The highly visible project envisions an artwork that will become a defining visual landmark for Buffalo Park and the surrounding area. The mural could reflect Flagstaff, Northern Arizona, the current activity and/or history of the park, or the communities that utilize this natural and recreational resource among other ideas.

Flagstaff City Council supports purchase of downtown parcel for parking and other uses

FLAGSTAFF — Allthrive365 (formerly known as the Foundation for Senior Living), owns the parcel at 320 S. Humphreys St and had planned to build two housing communities on the parcel.

The City has been leasing the southern portion of the parcel for parking for the Municipal Courthouse and downtown needs. In late 2025, Allthrive365 approached the city to discuss options for the city to purchase the southern portion of the parcel. In December 2025, Council approved moving forward with purchasing this southern portion to be used for parking for Courthouse and downtown patrons.

The City of Flagstaff seeks Statements of Qualifications (SOQs) for an artist or artist team to design and execute a large-scale mural on a water tank at Buffalo Park. This highly visible project envisions an artwork that will become an emblematic feature of the park and the surrounding area. The mural could reflect Flagstaff, Northern Arizona, the current activity and/or history of the park, or the communities that utilize this natural and recreational resource among other ideas.

Five finalists will receive an honorarium of $5,000. The total budget for this project is up to $300,000 for fabrication and installation.

Flagstaff Mayor Becky Daggett appointed to Arizona Commission on the Arts

FLAGSTAFF — Gov. Katie Hobbs has appointed Flagstaff Mayor Becky Daggett to serve on the Arizona Commission on the Arts. Commission members are chosen for their demonstrated ability, good judgment, and experience in arts-related fields.

Mayor Becky Daggett was born and raised in Arizona and is a passionate advocate for affordable housing, the arts, forest health and climate action, and education. She won her first term on the Flagstaff City Council in 2020 and was elected mayor in 2022.

Flagstaff’s Accessory Dwelling Unit (backyard homes or casitas) Model Plans Library now available

FLAGSTAFF — The City of Flagstaff announces the launch of its Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) Model Plans Library at www.flagstaff.az.gov/ADUs. The Library contains 10 pre-approved, publicly viewable ADU model plans, while additional plans are currently under review.  

ADUs, also known as backyard homes or casitas, are important to the City’s climate and housing goals because these smaller housing units have the potential to offer lower rent and monthly utility costs and increase Flagstaff’s housing supply. These units can also provide more flexible housing options for households of all sizes, generate supplemental rental income for homeowners, and increase housing availability in established, more central neighborhoods. 

City of Flagstaff hosts meet and greet event for Deputy City Manager candidates on Feb. 11

FLAGSTAFF — The City of Flagstaff is hosting a meet and greet event for members of the community to meet and provide feedback on candidates for the Deputy City Manager position. The City began its competitive search following the appointment of former Deputy City Manager, Joanne Keene, to the role of City Manager. The City received 184 applications and six finalists have been invited to participate in in-person interviews and an in-person public meet and greet event on Wednesday, Feb. 11 from 5 -6:45 p.m. at Flagstaff City Hall in Council Chambers (211 W Aspen Ave).

Flagstaff Senior Deputy City Manager Shannon Anderson credentialed by International City/County Management Association

FLAGSTAFF — Flagstaff Senior Deputy City Manager Shannon Anderson will receive the Credentialed Manager designation from the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) in January 2026. Anderson joins over 1,300 local government management professionals currently credentialed through the ICMA Voluntary Credentialing Program.

ICMA’s mission is to advance professional local government through leadership, management, innovation, and ethics by increasing the proficiency of appointed chief administrative officers, assistant administrators, and other employees who serve local governments and regional entities around the world.

New art projects celebrate Southside history and community in Flagstaff

FLAGSTAFF — The City of Flagstaff Beautification, Arts & Sciences program has announced the completion of two public art projects at Cleo Murdoch Park and the Murdoch Community Center.

“Rustle,” an 8-foot-high weathering steel artwork located at Cleo Murdoch Park, adjacent to the Murdoch Community Center, was designed by artist Beth Nybeck. The sculpture incorporates words and phrases contributed by the community into its leaf-like form.  Symbolizing both nature and the interconnected stories that define the neighborhood, the artwork celebrates the Southside, its history, and its people.

City of Flagstaff accepting applications for Technology Privacy Task Force

FLAGSTAFF — The City of Flagstaff is now accepting applications from community members who are interested in serving on the City’s Technology Privacy Task Force. This 10-member task force will be responsible for reviewing the City’s current technology policies, examining proposals for new technology, and providing critical input and recommendations. This work will help shape the rules that govern how the City collects, uses, and protects resident data.

Flagstaff wins prestigious Dark Sky Place of the Year award

FLAGSTAFF — The City of Flagstaff has been awarded the prestigious Dark Sky Place of the Year award from DarkSky International. This recognition follows more than six decades of intentional stewardship of the City’s night skies, beginning when Flagstaff created the world’s first outdoor lighting ordinance in 1958. Following a proposal from the Flagstaff Dark Skies Coalition to create the program, Flagstaff was designated the world’s first International Dark Sky City on Oct. 24, 2001. Today, Flagstaff remains the largest such community by population and proves that cities can enjoy economic growth while conserving the nighttime environment for its residents and visitors.
