City of Flagstaff receives multiple awards at AZ Water Conference in April

Among the award recipients were Engineering Senior Lead Project Manager David Pedersen, Emergency Management Director Stacey Brechler-Knaggs, and Water Production Manager Brian Huntzinger, who along with city contractors Hunter Contracting and Jacobs Engineering, won the Project of the Year Award for their work on the Inner Basin Waterline Restoration Project. Substantially completed in fall 2024, the project restored drinking water production from the Inner Basin after the 2022 Pipeline Fire. The subsequent monsoonal flooding damaged this critical waterline infrastructure which the project restored. The team was recognized by the Flagstaff City Council this week for their achievement.

City of Flagstaff — Updated dates for pine needle pickup initiative

FLAGSTAFF — Due to unforeseen logistical complications, the City of Flagstaff is updating the dates during which roll-off dumpsters will be placed in neighborhoods around the City to allow residents to dispose of pine needles near their homes. Dumpsters will be placed in the University Heights neighborhood from April 25 – May 2 and the schedule for placement of dumpsters in other neighborhoods will be published when available.

City of Flagstaff announces Bureau of Reclamation begins development of scope of work for Red Gap Ranch Regional Project (regional water supply pipeline) appraisal-level study

FLAGSTAFF — On March 3, 2025, the Phoenix Area Office of the Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) agreed to begin developing a scope of work for an appraisal-level study for the City of Flagstaff’s planned regional water supply pipeline from Red Gap Ranch (Regional Project). The City acquired Reg Gap Ranch in 2005 with 71% voter-approved funding for future water supply. Together with continued conservation measures, the Regional Project at Red Gap Ranch can provide resiliency to the City’s existing water system and add needed protections against drought and natural disasters. Red Gap Ranch is located about 35 miles east of Flagstaff along the I-40 corridor.

Lane shifts along Cedar Avenue will be in place during this work to maintain eastbound and westbound traffic along Cedar Avenue. Pedestrian and bicyclist access will be maintained through the area during construction. Motorists are asked to follow the marked signage/detour to get to their destination.

FLAGSTAFF — The Flagstaff Fire Department and the City of Flagstaff Sustainability Division are facilitating the placement of rollout dumpsters in neighborhoods around the City to allow residents to dispose of pine needles near their homes. The Flagstaff Fire Department recommends that residents remove excess pine needles from their yards and areas near their homes to lower the risk of wildfire danger.

FLAGSTAFF — The City of Flagstaff and Arizona Public Service (APS) have partnered on a pilot program to transform 10 utility cabinets into stunning works of art. To celebrate this collaboration, the City and APS hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony on March 25 to unveil a newly wrapped cabinet at the entrance of Sinagua Middle School, featuring artwork by local artist Jo Rohrbacker.

Building on the City’s highly successful traffic signal cabinet program, this initiative continues to turn utilitarian cabinets into colorful, community-centered art. Now in its fifth year, the program has introduced a variety of designs to Flagstaff’s streetscapes, from imaginative scenes of northern Arizona’s flora and fauna to playful abstract compositions. The artistic wraps, made of durable vinyl, are designed to last up to five years while providing the added benefit of deterring graffiti and vandalism.

Fourth-Lockett Roundabout project – Preliminary construction activities to begin March 31

FLAGSTAFF — The Arizona Department of Transportation, City of Flagstaff, and Fann Contracting are set to begin a project to construct a new roundabout that will replace the signalized intersection at Fourth Street and Cedar Avenue/Lockett Road to improve the safety and function of the intersection. This new roundabout will be designed with flashing pedestrian crossing beacons and will slow speeds, help avoid angle collisions and add a crosswalk at the fourth leg of the intersection. Additional work includes the installation of water, sewer and storm drain infrastructure.

FLAGSTAFF —The City of Flagstaff has launched a new community information and engagement platform called Connect Flagstaff. This new site provides opportunities for residents to engage in various City surveys and other engagement initiatives, while also providing information on ongoing and longer-term projects in our community.

Residents are invited to engage on the Connect Flagstaff site by participating in open projects to share thoughts and feedback with City staff. While residents do not need to register to participate in some projects, registration offers the ability to select geographical areas and topics of interest and the ability to sign up to receive customized future notifications.

FLAGSTAFF — The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) has awarded Bronze Level to the City of Flagstaff Rio de Flag Water Reclamation Facility in their Voluntary Environmental Stewardship Program.

Bronze Level recognizes organizations that demonstrate strong environmental compliance and go beyond legal requirements to protect human and environmental health. To qualify, regulated facilities must have zero violations on record with any environmental regulatory agency for the past three years.

FLAGSTAFF — The City of Flagstaff invites Southside residents, past and present, as well as those with strong ties to the neighborhood to contribute their memories and reflections for an upcoming public art installation. The sculpture, titled “Rustle,” will be placed at the newly named Cleo Murdoch Park, adjacent to the Murdoch Community Center at 203 E. Brannen Avenue.

The 8-foot-high weathering steel sculpture, designed by artist Beth Nybeck, will incorporate words and phrases contributed by the community into its leaf-like form. Symbolizing both nature and the interconnected stories that define the area, the piece will celebrate the Southside, its history and its people.

Over 2,000 comments were submitted during the 60-day public review, which occurred from October 20, 2024 to December 19, 2024. It was wonderful to see how many people dedicated their time to reading the plan and providing feedback. We have read every comment and we are working on revisions to the draft.

City of Flagstaff announces public art opportunity for Spruce Wash Wedge

The artwork will be a visually striking and durable installation that enhances the cultural and aesthetic landscape of the neighborhood and Flagstaff. This public art installation, known as the Spruce Wash Wedge Artwork, is a part of the Spruce Wash Watershed Improvements flood mitigation project. The site-specific piece will integrate with a reconfigured promontory, which includes a new retaining wall and expanded sidewalk landing. It will serve as a distinctive icon, engaging community members and passersby.

Community garden plot applications opening soon for the 2025 growing season

FLAGSTAFF — Members of the public are invited to submit applications for community garden plots starting on Saturday, March 1. Applications will remain open until March 31 or until filled. Returning gardeners will have priority to secure their plots from the previous season, and remaining available plots will be offered to new gardeners on a first-come, first-served basis. New gardeners who do not have access to growing space at home or those who qualify for SNAP benefits will be given priority for remaining available plots through the application process.

FLAGSTAFF — The Flagstaff City Council continues to advocate against the mining of uranium and its transport in and through our region, including passing multiple resolutions and supporting federal legislation that would restrict uranium mining and transport.

While the Flagstaff City Council opposes the transport of uranium ore through our community, the City Council does not have jurisdiction over federal or state highways.

The lead arts agency will act as the coordinating body for arts, culture and science initiatives in Flagstaff. Responsibilities include long-term planning, sector leadership, and collaboration with local and external partners to address infrastructure needs and opportunities. The agency will also promote community engagement, enhance funding through grants and other means, and provide technical support and training to individuals and organizations. Additionally, it will contribute directly to the cultural landscape by producing exhibitions and events that foster community vitality, expand participation, and encourage both public and private investment. Programs and offerings will be reviewed annually to align with the community’s evolving needs.

FLAGSTAFF — Tthe intersection of Milton Road and University Avenue (future Fresquez Avenue) has been closed to all traffic. This closure is required to allow crews to install new storm drain and utility infrastructure, and is expected to last one month. Access to properties along University Avenue (future Fresquez Avenue) will be provided via Yale Street and the new Beulah Boulevard extension. Thru traffic along Milton Road will not be impacted. Please follow the marked signage and drive safely.

City of Flagstaff announces ‘The Wedge’ slip lane closure to begin Wednesday, Feb. 12

This closure is necessary for crews to install new concrete and drainage improvements. As part of the Spruce Wash suite of projects, a new section of sidewalk will be added that will connect the existing sidewalk on Cedar Avenue to the Linda Vista Drive crossing via the slip lane. This closure will be in effect 24 hours a day for approximately one month. Motorists can still make turning movements onto Cedar Avenue via the signaled intersection. Please follow the marked signage/detour to get to your destination.

FLAGSTAFF — The City of Flagstaff and Eagle Mountain Construction, along with the Arizona Department of Transportation, are set to install new traffic signal poles at the intersection of Milton Road and University Drive on Tuesday, February 11, and Wednesday, February 12. To safely install these poles, the intersection of Milton Road and University Drive will be closed periodically with police officers present to assist.

FLAGSTAFF — The City of Flagstaff, through its Beautification, Arts & Sciences (BAS) program, invites artists, community members and groups, schools and local businesses to apply for a Beautification in Action (BIA) grant. Applications will be accepted through March 15 at 5 p.m. Up to $7,500 is available per project.

Projects that enliven and revitalize the urban environment can take the form of community gardens, neighborhood paths, benches, sculptures, murals and more. Priority will be given to community-initiated projects that provide a lasting impact—fostering cultural connections, strengthening neighborhood awareness and identity, and deepening how residents and visitors interact with the built environment. All projects must be publicly and visually accessible.

Mayor Becky Daggett said “while we’re relieved that it appears the federal funding freeze has been temporarily halted, I’d like to stress the critical importance this funding has in our community. It’s not an overstatement to say that the freeze would have a catastrophic impact on Flagstaff. Many of the city’s flood mitigation, transportation, and public safety projects are dependent upon this funding from our federal partners. Additionally, this funding freeze impacts local non-profit organizations we rely upon to provide basic services and our partners such as Coconino County and Northern Arizona University.”

FLAGSTAFF — Flagstaff City Manager Greg Clifton and Deputy City Manager Joanne Keene both recently received the Credentialed Manager designation from the International City/County Management Association (ICMA). City Manager Clifton and Deputy City Manager Keene join over 1,300 local government management professionals currently credentialed through the ICMA Voluntary Credentialing Program.

ICMA’s mission is to advance professional local government through leadership, management, innovation, and ethics by increasing the proficiency of appointed chief administrative officers, assistant administrators, and other employees who serve local governments and regional entities around the world.

City of Flagstaff announces excavation to begin for the Wedge Detention Basin Project

FLAGSTAFF — The City of Flagstaff and contractor, Eagle Mountain Construction, are set to begin excavation operations for The Wedge Detention Basin Project. These excavation operations will take place within the area of the construction yard, which will shrink as excavation continues. These excavation operations are the first part of detention basin construction, with the majority of construction taking place in the spring when temperatures are favorable. The Wedge Detention Basin is being constructed to hold excess stormwater run-off that would otherwise overwhelm the box culvert being installed along Linda Vista Drive. The basin is designed to fill with water, and then slowly release it back into the City’s stormwater management system when it is safe to do so.

FLAGSTAFF — The annual Point in Time Count (PIT) will take place starting Thursday, Jan. 23 throughout Coconino County. This count documents the number of unsheltered people experiencing homelessness at a single point in time and is conducted across the country.

Local data collected during the annual PIT Count measuresprogress at local and national levels related to preventing andending homelessness. Information gathered from the surveyscan help raise awareness about the challenges faced by people who are experiencing homeless in the community. Data is alsoshared on the local, state and national level to determinefunding for homeless services throughout Coconino County.This count is required by the U.S. Department of Housing andUrban Development.

City of Flagstaff awarded $19M federal grant for Butler Avenue and Fourth Street safety and multimodal improvements

FLAGSTAFF — The City of Flagstaff has been awarded a Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) grant from the US Department of Transportation for $19,000,000 for the construction of the Butler Avenue and Fourth Street safety and multimodal improvements project. This project will construct multimodal improvements along Butler Avenue from I-40 to Sinagua Heights Drive and Fourth Street from Sparrow Avenue to Crest Stone. The improvements include off-street bike lanes, ADA-compliant sidewalks, mid-block crossings, roadway widening and corridor access management solutions.
