FLAGSTAFF — The City of Flagstaff will begin a roof replacement project at the historic Milligan House, located at 323 W. Aspen Avenue, starting Monday, May 11. The project is expected to take approximately one week to complete, weather permitting.

The Milligan House, built circa 1904, has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the Department of Interior. It is architecturally significant as a unique representation of Victorian residential architecture in Flagstaff and carries additional significance for its connection to James C. Milligan, a local brickmaker and building contractor who played a major role in shaping Flagstaff’s historic commercial and residential landscape.

Milligan arrived in Flagstaff in 1887, five years after the town was founded, and by 1888 had established his own brickyard near a sandstone quarry east of town.  The house he built for his family became one of the most distinctive homes in the city, reflecting a Queen Anne architectural style that still draws admirers today. The property later served as apartments and now houses the offices of the Flagstaff Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Protecting a National Register property requires consistent maintenance. The original wood shake shingles will be replaced with a composite material that closely matches the historic profile and appearance of the original. The approach honors the building’s historic character while providing modern durability and weather protection.

The parking area adjacent to the building will be temporarily closed during construction. The ADA-accessible parking space remains open throughout the project. The on-site electric vehicle charging station will be offline, however, the Wheeler Park parking lot EV chargers are available as an alternative.
