Grand Canyon National Park Implements Stage 2 Fire Restrictions

June 26, 2026 at 12 p.m.

GRAND CANYON, AZ: Grand Canyon National Park will implement Stage 2 Fire Restrictions for the South Rim and Inner Canyon beginningJune 26, 12:00 PM due to forecasted critical fire weather conditions.

The North Rim remains under Stage 2 Fire Restrictions that took effect on May 15, 2026, at the start of the summer operating season following the 2025 Dragon Bravo Fire. Those restrictions remain unchanged.

With this action, Stage 2 Fire Restrictions will be in effect throughout Grand Canyon National Park.

The National Weather Service has forecast strong winds, critically low relative humidity, and exceptionally dry vegetation across northern Arizona. These conditions significantly increase the potential for rapid wildfire growth and make suppression efforts more difficult if a fire starts.

Grand Canyon National Park is implementing Stage 2 Fire Restrictions to reduce potential human-caused ignition sources during this period of elevated fire danger. In addition to critical fire weather, Arizona Public Service (APS) has identified conditions that may warrant a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) to reduce the risk of electrical infrastructure igniting a wildfire. Together, these actions are intended to reduce preventable wildfire starts during a period of heightened fire risk.

Protecting visitors, employees, residents, firefighters, neighboring communities, and the park’s natural and cultural resources remain the National Park Service’s highest priority.

Beginning June 26, 12:00 PM, the following activities are prohibited on the South Rim and Inner Canyon. These restrictions are already in effect on the North Rim.

  • All wood-burning and charcoal fires, including campfires, warming fires, and charcoal barbecues.
  • Outdoor smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle or while stopped in an area at least three feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of flammable material.
  • Fireworks and other incendiary devices. Fireworks are prohibited on public lands at all times.
  • Operating internal combustion equipment capable of producing sparks, including chainsaws, weed trimmers, welders, wood splitters, generators, and similar equipment, unless authorized through the park’s hot work permit process.
  • Parking off established roadways unless the area is barren or cleared of flammable vegetation within at least three feet of the vehicle.

Exceptions

The following activities remain permitted under Stage 2 Fire Restrictions:

  • Liquid petroleum gas (LPG) or propane-fueled devices that can be turned on and off, including camp stoves, lanterns, and heating devices, may be used only in an area that is barren or cleared of all flammable materials within at least three feet of the device.
  • Generators equipped with an approved spark arrestor may be operated at park residences or developed campgrounds when used in an area cleared of flammable vegetation within at least three feet of the generator.
  • Charcoal may be ignited for cooking only along the Colorado River corridor shoreline, as provided under existing park regulations.

Stage 2 Fire Restrictions will remain in effect until fire danger decreases and conditions allow them to be safely lifted.

Visitors are encouraged to recreate responsibly, remain aware of changing weather conditions, and do their part to prevent human-caused wildfires.
